The College of Health Sciences The College of Health Sciences (CHS) is among the first established colleges at the University of Sharjah, forming an integral part of the University‘s existence. Programs in the College embrace a multi disciplinary approach to education and a broad range of subject areas that focus on the intensive study of the allied health and social sciences to provide students with a comprehensive understanding and background in these areas. The College of Health Sciences, established in 1998, received extensive program support from McMaster University in Canada during its early stages. The College is endowed with a beautiful campus, within the University’s Medical Complex and in close proximity to the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry; to leading centers for research and clinical training; and to the University Hospital, thus providing an ideal integrated environment for students and professionals in these fields. PROGRAMS The College currently offers seven accredited undergraduate baccalaureate programs in: Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Diagnostic Imaging, Nursing, Health Services Administration, Physiotherapy, Environmental Health, and Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics. The Departments of Nursing and Medical Diagnostic Imaging also offer bridging/ post diploma programs. All programs foster creative and analytical thinking skills and prepare students to be active, evidence based learners throughout their lives by integrating theoretical, practical, clinical and field learning. Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) equips students with the competence to perform clinical laboratory analyses, interpretation and procedures. Students spend the majority of their senior year engaged in clinical practice at local hospitals. Many MLS graduates seek careers in hospitals, private clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical, food, and educational industries or environmental protection agencies and organizations. Our MLS program recently received approval from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), recognizing it as equivalent to that of United States MLS bachelor’s programs. Medical Diagnostic Imaging (MDI) prepares students to work with various imaging modalities including Computerized Tomography (CT),Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine (NM), Ultrasound (US) and digital imaging systems. MDI graduates may work in hospitals and clinics, educational and research settings and various fields of industry. Nursing (NSG) prepares nurses to work in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, schools and communities. Career opportunities are vast due to the high demand for nurses in the UAE and worldwide. The Department of Nursing offers two streams in the undergraduate nursing program, a four-year stream for high school graduates and a bridging/post-diploma stream for registered nurses with a diploma in nursing. Health Services Administration (HSA) provides several career opportunities in the UAE and Arab Gulf region. Graduates may work in healthcare facilities including public and private hospitals or organizations that cater to healthcare facilities such as research and development firms, pharmaceutical and insurance companies, and computer software firms. The program prepares graduates to deal with all the business aspects of the healthcare industry including human resources, accounting, marketing, planning, information systems and facility management. Physiotherapy (PT) graduates qualify as physiotherapists and provide preventative and therapeutic services aimed at restoring human function and preventing disability arising from disease, trauma or injury. Graduates work in a variety of healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, sports and fitness centers, geriatric facilities and communities. Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) graduates qualify as environmental health professionals equipped with an understanding of how the environment impacts health and how to assess and control environmental determinants that have an impact on health. Graduates work in health centers and hospitals, petroleum and gas companies, factories, municipalities, environmental institutions, ports, and airports. Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics (CN&D) prepares qualified clinical nutritionists and dietitians to play a critical role in the delivery of healthcare. This program focuses on the intensive study of the allied life, health and social sciences to equip students with an understanding of food, nutrition and their relationship to health. Changes in lifestyle, as well as the trends of today’s major health crises, make this specialization popular among students. Graduates work in hospitals, schools, health centers, primary healthcare departments, and related sectors. All College programs are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education in the UAE 6

Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS), also called Clinical Laboratory Science, provides the laboratory information and services needed for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. It is the largest single medical domain to deliver health and disease status reports, laboratory tests, analyses and test results upon which the majority of critical medical decisions are based on. Medical laboratory scientists perform a variety of laboratory tests to detect and diagnose diseases such as diabetes, leukemia, heart disease, bacterial infections, genetic disorders, and many other diseases and health conditions. 8

Our Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) program is one of the premier programs established within the College of Health Sciences at the University of Sharjah. Our program enjoys a reputation of excellence, within the local, regional and global academic and medical communities, in addition to a strong record of professional success among our graduates. The MLS program prepares competent professionals skilled in performing and interpreting laboratory tests results vital to the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The MLS program is a four-year program leading to a B.Sc. Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences (B.Sc. MLS). A student’s first two years are composed of general college requirements and MLS prerequisites, while the third year is dedicated to MLS program requirements. The fourth year engages students in clinical coursework and training at regional hospitals. The extensive nature of the fourth year practical component guarantees students a high degree of technical and professional competency prior to graduating from our program. UNPARALLELED RESOURCES Our MLS program is unique and exceptional since it is internationally recognized by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as equivalent to an MLS bachelor’s programs in the United States. Accordingly, our graduates are eligible to take the international certification exam (ASCPi) without having to attain transcript equivalency from ASCP prior to their exams. Faculty members are highly qualified, competent and experienced in their areas of specialization and actively participate in research and community services. • The MLS program is the first in the UAE to be recognized by the international American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification as equivalent to that of an MLT bachelor’s program in the United States. • Graduates are qualified to take the international American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCPi) certification examination to gain certification as medical laboratory scientists. • Graduates are also eligible to take the certification examination offered by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). 9 UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH - COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES

Owing togreat advances inbiomedicine and technology, the role of medical laboratory specialists in patient care and management has gained great momentum in recent years. The wide array of diagnostic lab tests performed by the diagnostic lab in any health care facility is a cornerstone upon which physicians and practitioners base their professional decisions as to how to treat and manage patients. Hence, there is a growing need for highly qualified senior lab practitioners who could oversee the work of specialist and ensure the highest level of quality. Hospitals and other health care facilities as well as accrediting entities consider it a pre-requisite for any medical diagnosis lab to be supervised by competent and welltrained individuals. PROGRAM OF STUDY • MLS science subjects applied to the diagnosis and treatment of disease include: • Hematology/Hemostasis (the science of studying blood cells, blood clotting, and bleeding disorders) • Microbiology (the science of microorganisms causing diseases such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites) • Clinical Chemistry (the science of studying chemical changes in diseases including diabetes, renal failure, heart diseases, cancers, hormones, and many others). • Immunology and serology (the science of studying the immune system and its disorders) • Blood Banking (the science of dealing with blood transfusions and organ transplantation) • Histopathology (the science of dealing with the pathology and histology of tissues and organs). • DNA analysis (the science of dealing with the genetic and molecular disorders of the DNA) AFTER GRADUATION MLS graduates are in high demand across the globe and experience a wide window of career opportunities as: • Clinical laboratory generalists in hospitals, clinics or private laboratories. • Clinical laboratory specialists working in such areas as microbiology, hematology, chemistry, molecular biology/DNA, histocompatibility, immunology, and in blood banks or stem cell/bone marrow labs. • Clinical laboratory supervisors or managers. • Quality assurance/quality specialists in hospitals or industries (e.g. pharmaceutical quality operations). • Technical representatives, sales representatives or research and development specialists in laboratory industries. • Research technologists or research supervisors/ coordinators in academic medical centers. • Infection control officers in hospitals or clinics. • Educators for employee training programs or formal academic programs. Bachelor of Science in Medical Diagnostic Imaging Medical Diagnostic Imaging (MDI) is a medical specialty that uses X-rays, ultra-sound waves, and magnetic fields to produce images of organs and other internal structures of the body in order to detect, diagnose and treat diseases. It is also used to monitor the progress of diseases and medical conditions and/or guide medical procedures. 12

The MDI Department offers two plans to fulfill the career objectives and aspirations of its students. The Bachelor of Science in Medical Diagnostic Imaging (B.Sc. MDI) takes a minimum of four years full-time study, during which students complete 137 credit hours. The Bridging Plan (Track A) takes a minimum of two years full-time study (73 credit hours), while (Track B) requires a minimum of three years full-time study (99 credit hours). PROGRAM OF STUDY Students in the Medical Diagnostic Imaging program are introduced to an array of practical and theoretical courses on the safe use of imaging techniques. Students learn about skeletal radiology, imaging of the chest and abdomen, and fluoroscopy imaging of the digestive system, the heart, blood vessels and urinary system. Highly qualified faculty deliver courses in radiographic techniques, diagnostic equipment and patient care. Advanced techniques courses include Interventional Radiography (IR), Ultrasound (US), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), and Nuclear Medicine (NM). In their senior year, students receive supervised practical experience in clinics and hospitals to gain knowledge of the latest digital systems, link academic knowledge with practical skills and perform as team players with other health professionals. AFTER GRADUATION Demand for Radiographers and Medical Imaging Specialists (MIS) is exceedingly high across the globe. Students may seek careers in hospital settings or outpatient clinics. You may specialize in computed tomography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, digital imaging, PACS or nuclear medicine and/or be responsible for quality assurance and overseeing the implementation of new technology. Graduates might manage an entire radiology department, including its budget and personnel or you may assume academic teaching positions. The boundaries of your career in Medical Diagnostic Imaging are limitless, determined only by your abilities and interests. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Nursing is a dynamic ever-changing healthcare profession that offers unlimited opportunities for its graduates. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Sharjah prepares new students and nurses already in the field to become leaders and contribute to the advancement of health and the healthcare profession. The Department of Nursing has grown significantly since its inception and is now preparing for a master’s degree in critical care Nursing. The department is committed to excellence in the field of education, research, nursing practice, and administration. The program emphasizes the development of student analytical skills through problem-based and team-based learning. Hospitals and community partners provide quality-learning opportunities for nursing students and join faculty and graduate students in offering the latest in nursing through evidence based research and clinical practice. UNPARALLELED RESOURCES Clinical Nursing Skills Laboratories The Department of Nursing has three specialized clinical nursing skills laboratories that meet international standards for clinical education including: • Skills Lab for Fundamentals of Nursing and Adult Health Nursing • Skills Lab for Maternity & Child Health Nursing • Skills Lab for Physical Assessment & Critical Care Nursing Clinical Training Clinical training for nursing students is provided in primary, secondary and tertiary care facilities in the UAE. Clinical sites are chosen in alignment with course outcomes and training is structured upon tutorial/preceptor models. 14

PROGRAMS OF STUDY The Department of Nursing offers two educational streams: Stream A is a four-year program for secondary school graduates; and Stream B is offered to diploma-registered nurses. “Stream A” Courses include: • Health Sciences courses providing a sound background in basic and health sciences including biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and pathophysiology. • Nursing courses (theoretical and clinical) providing the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities in a variety of healthcare settings. • University required courses. “Stream B” Courses include: • Health Sciences courses including Pathophysiology, General Microbiology, and Biostatistics. • Advanced nursing theory courses including: Advanced Health Assessment, Advanced Communication, Health Education and Health Promotion, and Theory Application in Nursing Practice. • Clinical courses that focus on health assessment and communication, community nursing and on student selected areas including nursing education, management and leadership, or advanced nursing practice. • University required courses. UPON GRADUATION Employment opportunities abound for graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.N) due to the high demand for nurses in the UAE and worldwide. Graduates from the program are employed as general nurses providing direct healthcare to patients, families and communities. Graduates may assume various roles in nursing practice, education, leadership and management, and research. MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ADULT CRITICAL CARE NURSING The College of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing Master of Science in Adult Critical Care responds to the current and emerging health care needs in the UAE. This program supports the University’s strategic plan to develop post graduate programs and to continue the development of Nursing within the UAE. The program is student centered, clinically focused, culturally relevant, geographically proximal and cost effective alternative to studying abroad. Moreover, it will strengthen the UOS interdisciplinary effort which implies inter-program collaboration in teaching, clinical and research. Program Objectives The goals of the program are to: Produce competent professional critical care nurse graduates able to provide advanced care practice for adult patients with multiple complex problems and their families. Provide continuing education for critical care nurses to contribute to the health and wellness of the most vulnerable, focusing on the use of technology, advances in critical care practice, and the implementation of evidence based nursing. Develop the research skills of the graduate in appraising and publishing clinical research papers with confidence. Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration Health administration refers to the business side of the healthcare industry. Healthcare administrators oversee the dayto-day operation of hospitals or medical practices, making decisions about how to save money, hire staff and handle quality of care, financial and legal problems. Students enrolled in the program attend a variety of multidisciplinary courses in healthcare management that prepare them for entry-level positions managing a wide range of healthcare facilities. Graduates from the program may seek careers in hospitals, health insurance firms, international organizations related to the health field, and pharmaceutical companies. 16

PROGRAM OF STUDY After passing their foundation year, students take courses comprised of a sequence of interrelated interdependent courses, all of which combine management and health including: Health-related courses such as healthcare terminology and classifications, epidemiology, and population health; management-related courses focused on hospital management, healthcare delivery systems and management in primary healthcare systems; health information management courses emphasizing computer applications for healthcare managers, health information systems, and managing health information systems for health services; and advanced managerial courses in healthcare management such as quality management in healthcare, planning for health services, and marketing for health services. AFTER GRADUATION This program avails a wide range of challenging career opportunities at hospitals or healthcare delivery units as administrators dealing with the quality of health services, health economics, health planning, health information management, healthcare statistics, organizational structures, and human resources and financial challenges, as well as guiding ethical decision-making. In addition to these career opportunities, graduates are prepared to pursue post-graduate Masters or PhD degrees. The Colleges Executive Council acts as a think tank and advisor to the College Dean. Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy The role of a physiotherapy graduate is to alleviate suffering, to enhance the physical abilities and wellness, and to improve the quality of life of persons of all ages suffering from deseases/ disorders of bones, muscles, joints, heart, lungs, and nervous system. This role includes education, prevention, treatment and intervention, and rehabilitation. Physiotherapy requires interaction between the physical therapist, patients/clients, other health professionals, families, healthcare providers, and communities through a coordinated process in which movement is assessed and goals are agreed upon based on knowledge and skills unique to physiotherapists. Physiotherapy is performed by a physical therapist or physiotherapist (PT). PT management commonly includes prescription of or assistance with specific exercises, manual therapy, education and various interventions. The University of Sharjah’s physiotherapy program is committed to serving its students, the community and the physiotherapy profession. The program accomplishes this by providing quality education, research and an array of community services. Through our responsive curriculum, the program delivers the highest quality of education to our students made evident by the career placement of our graduates, the continued growth of our program and our leadership role in the field physiotherapy within the community. The program further seeks to conduct quality and applicable research reflecting the unique needs of the broader region and the population by providing needed physiotherapists to serve the area and perform community outreach and services. 18

UNPARALLELED RESOURCES Our program boasts highly qualified and experienced faculty members from a variety of backgrounds and state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with the most up-to-date technology and facilities. Our students receive the highest standards of clinical training at a number of sites where they recieve hands-on training. Three laboratories are dedicated to specialty areas in physiotherapy and these are constantly upgraded with the latest of equipments and resources. Our physiotherapy program is fully accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Physiotherapy curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and reflection through small group tutorials, seminars, and self-directed learning. Our program further incorporates interprofessional skills and computer skills with the aim of preparing graduates to perform their roles as responsible healthcare professionals, leaders in the field of physiotherapy, life-long learners and well-equipped researchers. PROGRAM OF STUDY Students complete a total of 138 credit hours over at least four academic years to earn a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Physiotherapy (PT). The initial year covers basic topics such as biology, physics, chemistry and other college and University compulsory courses. In the second year, students are introduced to the core concepts of physiotherapy including biomechanics (the study of human movement), therapeutic modalities (the study of modalities used in patient treatment) and assessment, as well as a moderate level of exposure to clinical training. In the third year, students study more advanced topics in specialty areas, such as musculoskeletal coursework and neurology while engaging in their clinical practicum, which carries forward to the fourth year. In their senior year, students complete a research project and continue their clinical training in addition to covering other specialty areas such as geriatrics (study of elderly). AFTER GRADUATION Physiotherapists practice in many settings including outpatient clinics, hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, extended care facilities, education and research centers, schools, hospices, industrial workplaces, and fitness centers or sports training facilities. Students are also well prepared to pursue graduate studies towards a Master’s or PhD degree. Physiotherapists may assume non-patient care roles in areas such as health policy, health insurance, healthcare administration or as healthcare executives or professors. Faculty members provide physiotherapy consultation/treatment for the University community in physiotherapy clinics located in the men’s and women’s Medical Centers. Physiotherapists practice in many settings including outpatient clinics, hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, extended care facilities, education and research centers, schools, hospices, industrial workplaces, and fitness centers or sports training facilities. Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health Sciences Environmental health sciences is the study of the potential dangers and hazards that environmental factors may cause to human health. Our program stresses the measures that may be taken to recognize, evaluate, prevent, and control dangerous environmental factors and their hazardous effects on health. In realizing the important role of environment health to our local, regional and global communities, the University of Sharjah’s College of Health Sciences recently launched a bachelor’s program in Environmental Health in coordination with the Department of Environmental Health. Environmental health is a wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary field that embraces a broad range of subject areas. The Environmental Health practice covers the assessment, measurement, control and prevention of environmental factors that may adversely affect our health as well as the enhancement of environmental aspects that might improve human health. 20

Faculty members provide physiotherapy consultation/treatment for the University community in physiotherapy clinics located in the men’s and women’s Medical Centers. UNPARALLELED RESOURCES Relying upon the latest trends in environmental health and cutting edge technology, our program prepares environmental health professionals to fully comprehend the impact of the environment on health and equips them with the necessary skills and competencies to assess environmental health determinants and develop plans to modify and protect the environment. Our program encompasses the most effective measures available for dealing with issues related to environmental and occupational hazards, contaminated food and water, integrated solid and hazardous wastes management, environmental degradation and climate change. Students receive a broad and in-depth background, giving them wide range of specializations from which to choose within the field of environmental health. PROGRAM OF STUDY After completing the foundation year, students engage in the study of the following areas: Air pollution, global environmental issues (ozone depletion and global warming), (desertification, oil spills, etc.), water pollution, occupational health and safety, environmental and occupational toxicology, epidemiology, research methodology, food quality and safety, integrated solid and hazardous waste management, local environmental issues, building and human habitation, biodiversity, leadership and management, and environmental legislation. AFTER GRADUATION Environmental health graduates are highly sought after nationally, regionally and internationally for a variety of dynamic career options including work inmunicipalities, Ministry of Enviroment andWater the Ministries of Health, the Ministry of Labor, universities, environmental research centers and institutions, industries, petroleum companies, civil defense, the UAE Federal Environmental Agency, environmental research and wildlife development, consultancy agencies, the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, non-governmental organizations and other areas related to environment health and safety. MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH The MSc EH program is a two to four year full/part time program (33 credits), accredited by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. It comprises of two tracks – Track (A) Occupational Hygiene and Safety, and Track (B) Food Safety Management. Both tracks are essential in preparing Environmental Health professionals ready to become effective members of workforce and grab diverse employment opportunities at Ministries, municipalities, environmental agencies, various industries, airports and ports, consultancy firms, hospitality, oil and gas, research institutes, academia, among others. Graduates of the MSc EH program may also opt to pursue further doctoral studies in the field of environmental health science. Program Objectives The M.Sc. program in Environmental Health has the following goals: 1- Produce competent Environmental Health graduates who can identify, assess, prevent and manage local as well as global environmental challenges in a comprehensive, technically-sound, ethical, and sustainable manner. Training Professional practice (Field work) is an integral part of the curriculum. Bachelor of Science in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics Nutrition and Dietetics involves the art and science of applying the principles of good food and nutrition inmaintaining good health. Clinical nutritionists and dietitians play a vital role in promoting the health and nutrition of the community. 22

The Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics (CN&D) Program provides a novel and integrated approach to nutrition, food management and public health and addresses local and national health issues. The program focuses on various aspects of food and nutrition, while integrating the social, behavioral and life sciences. Comprehensive courses are delivered through diverse teaching strategies during classroom, laboratory and clinical practice sessions. UNPARALLELED RESOURCES The Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics in the College of Health Sciences is highly recognized for its teaching, training, research, and its competent and experienced faculty in their areas of specialization. Faculty members are fully dedicated to their students and actively participate in teaching, research and community services. Innovative teaching strategies are adopted to enhance effective learning processes in line with the international standards. In addition to full-time faculty, adjunct faculty coordinate with experts in clinical and community settings and serve as preceptors for students during their clinical practice. Our department provides effective academic advising and support to its students and motivates them towards successful academic and extra-curricular achievement. The University’s top-of-the-line infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories and diverse student facilities, contributes towards enriching our students’ learning experience. PROGRAM OF STUDY The four-year Bachelor of Science in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics is a comprehensive degree program: The first year comprises the essentials of life and health sciences including chemistry, biology, physics, human anatomy and physiology; the second year focuses on the applied sciences of biochemistry and microbiology with students being introduced to the fundamentals of nutrition, principles of food science, and the psychosocial aspects of food behavior; the third year introduces more specialized courses in nutrition related to nutritional assessment and nutritional demands during the life span, along with food processing, public health nutrition andmedical nutrition therapy; and the final year employs courses involving intensive knowledge and the application of advanced medical nutrition therapy, professional ethics and methods for nutrition research. AFTER GRADUATION Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities dealing with food, nutrition and dietetics. Upon completing the program, the graduates successfully engage in leading professions as researchers, consultants and entrepreneurs. Popular careers include those in hospitals, clinics, schools, health centers, primary healthcare departments, the food industry, nutraceutical companies, wellness clinics and other related sectors. In spring 2010, the Department of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics graduated its first batch of students. Opportunities Future EXPERTISE DEVELOPMENT Qualified graduates are equipped to assume positions of leadership in careers related to the area of specialization by providing services to either the public or private sectors, industries, educational establishments, media organizations or in community settings such as hospitals, health clinics, schools, universities and primary healthcare centers, sports medicine centers, rehabilitation centers, elderly homes, social centers, and research and other institutes requiring expertise in the allied health fields. Graduation Requirements Each program requires 140-143 credit hours of study depending upon the specialty. Graduates are successfully employed as researchers, consultants and entrepreneurs. 24

Admission Requirements MAKING THE GRADE Students with a minimum overall average of 75% on the UAE Secondary School Scientific Certificate or its equivalent, as approved by the Ministry of Education, may apply for admission to the College of Health Sciences. ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TESTS All new students applying to the College of Health Sciences are required to obtain a passing score on one of the English language proficiency exams recognized by the University of Sharjah. Students may take the institutional TOEFL exam at the University of Sharjah upon registration and must achieve a minimum score of 500. The University of Sharjah also accepts a minimum of 61 on the international iBT TOEFL (Internet-based exam), or a minimum of 5.0 on the academic IELTS exam provided that the student’s test score certificate is still in effect. ACCEPTANCE Admitted students are assigned to their majors based upon college capacity and the student’s preference and grade average.
