OUR VISION TheUniversity of Sharjah, College of Dental Medicine strives towards national and regional prominence, and subsequently international prominence. We do that by continually updating and aligning the undergraduate curriculum with the latest evidence-based practice, and by recruiting the best available faculty with a special emphasis to attract Emirati educators as role models and future leaders of the College. A caring scholarly and research culture will be inculcated, nurtured and supported among students and faculty. The College strives to provide the UAE with critical and effective national leaders in the delivery of optimal dental health care services, in dental education for the future of the University, and in scholarly activity for the development of new knowledge for the benefit of the region and the world. The College will strive to teach life lessons during the five years of the dental education such that we mould productive citizens, and on the way make them great dentists. OUR MISSION The mission of the College of Dental Medicine is to educate students by creating a supportive scholarly environment that fosters excellence in the lifelong goals of continuing education, scholarly activity, and compassionate patient care. OUR GOALS • Make greater use of developments in computer-aided instruction, audio-visual material and laboratory-based technique exercises. The College of Dental Medicine strives to provide an environment conducive to learning and instill in its students appropriate dentistry values and ethics so that future graduates may contribute effectively to serving the community’s dental needs. The College of Dental Medicine 4

• Reduce formal contact hours for teaching and provide greater opportunities for self-directed, experiential learning throughout the course. • Develop a more flexible curriculum structure, one that can respond rapidly to, and reflect, developments in the sciences and practice of dentistry. • Develop a course that students will find stimulating and enjoyable and one that engenders a desire to continue learning after graduation, i.e. to become life-long learners. • Introduce problem-based and team based learning throughout the course so that students (and later graduates) are able to better integrate learning material and apply their knowledge. • Facilitate greater opportunities for contextual learning. In the traditional model most of the basic and applied science material was presented in the early years. This material was often not reinforced later in the course where its relevance would have been appreciated more by students. A greater integration, balance and flow of material throughout the course is an important objective. OUR PROGRAMS Undergraduate Programs • BACHELOR OF DENTAL SURGERY (BDS) Graduate Programs • Master Of Dental Surgery In Oral Surgery • Master Of Dental Surgery In Prosthodontics • Master Of Dental Surgery In Periodontology • Master Of Dental Surgery In Endodontics • Master Of Dental Surgery In Orthodontics 5 UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH - COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE

Department of Oral &Craniofacial Health Sciences The Department of Oral and Craniofacial Health Sciences delivers its curriculum using a problem-based learning approach, as well as formal lectures and practical sessions. The Department offers dynamic and innovative learning and teaching opportunities across different fields that represent the core basis of the dental practice. In the Department, we aim to provide a stimulating and enjoyable study environment for our dental students to engender a desire for life-long education. This environment is created through a team of excellent educators with various teaching and research backgrounds across a wide range of disciplines. Our curriculum is delivered in a problem-based learning approach as well as formal lectures with great emphasis on contextual learning of relevant scientific information throughout the program. The Department offers dynamic and innovative learning and teaching opportunities across two main streams. These major streams are the basics of dental practice: Human Biology and Dental Health Sciences. The Human Biology stream aims to provide an overview of the biology of the human body, a basic knowledge of classical and molecular genetics, and an introduction to the anatomy of the human body at the gross and histological levels. At the second level, this stream includes topics related to human structure and function, anatomy of the head and neck, and, neuroanatomy. This leads to the third level of this stream which includes topics dealing with the nature and causes of human disease and their manifestation at the cellular, organ, and clinical levels. The Dental and Health Science stream emphasizes the scientific basis of dentistry and covers oral anatomy, preventive dentistry, and the dentist-patient relationship. It also covers oral histology and embryology, oral biochemistry, dental occlusion, masticatory function and disorder, human growth and development, and orthodontics. Dental and Health Science covers aspects of pharmacology, medicine, and surgery related to Dental Practice. These streams are integrated and form the basis for each PBL case. This occurs concurrently with the development of clinical skills in various technical and clinical areas of dentistry, which begins from day one in the Dental Clinical Practice stream. The faculty in our Department therefore contribute to both basic dental sciences and clinical education. 6

Department of Preventive and RestorativeDentistry The Department of Preventive and Restorative Dentistry comprises of seven specialties including Community Dentistry and Preventive Dentistry, Removable and Fixed Prosthodontics, Operative Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontology, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. Preclinical and clinical educational programs operate within the laboratories and clinics of the dental facilities. We integrate emerging technologies into the education program and in the delivery of patient care. The Department has the largest responsibility for the clinical teaching at the College of Dental Medicine and University Dental Hospital Sharjah, with particular focus on providing patient centered comprehensive dental care. The Department is also committed to preparing future dentists to understand and recognize principles of preventive dentistry as it applied to individual patients and communities with special emphasis on special needs and underserved populations. Research at the Department spans the spectrum from basic to translational to clinical to population health research. The Department is very active in biomaterial and dental public health research, with funding from the industry as well as the University. Areas of emphasis include, Dental Biomaterials, Biomimetic and related sciences. A major focus of this research area is the development of an enhanced understanding of reasons for the clinical success or failure of dental biomaterials. Research in dental public health and behavioral science includes a spectrum of ongoing projects, related to the estimates of the prevalence of oral conditions in the UAE population, prevention of oral diseases and the assessment of the impact of oral conditions on quality of life. The Department of Preventive and Restorative Dentistry interfaces with the Department of Oral and Craniofacial Health Sciences in developing a motivating environment for dental education. Clinical education for students begins during their first year in the College and full dental clerkship commences in the fourth year. Senior clinical students practice patient care, while being intensively supervised by a team of clinical faculty and instructors who specialize in various dental fields. Dental clinical services are equipped with ultra-modern dental technology, capable of handling any dental case ranging from a routine dental check-up to teeth whitening procedures and advanced dental implant surgery. Students, faculty, tutors, dental hygienists, nurses, dental technologists, dental radiographers, and CSSD technicians make up the professional team, which ensures a pleasant experience for every patient visiting the University Dental Hospital Sharjah (UDHS). 7 UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH - COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE

Bachelor of Science inDental Surgery Bachelor of Science in Dental Surgery Dentistry is a unique specialty among health sciences. On one hand, it relieves unbearable pain, and on the other hand it creates a beautiful smile that helps people communicate better. PROGRAM OF STUDY The curriculum consists of three phases that are completed over a six-year period. Phase 1: Foundation Sciences The first year at the College of Dental Medicine prepares students to achieve the level of knowledge necessary to assimilate the more challenging medical and dental science subjects in the later phases. Students are exposed to new learning methods in both physics and biology in the form of problem-based learning, group projects, critical and lateral thinking and scientific literature research and writing. Self-directed learning philosophy is emphasized and other academic and social activities are conducted to facilitate a smooth transfer from high school education to university campus life. Phase II: Integrated Dental Sciences FIRST, SECOND and THIRD YEAR– BDS 2 ,1 and 3 The Phase II program runs over three years and is composed of teaching-learning activities that are delivered in four streams. A “stream” is an educational structure, organization, and philosophy that depicts a collection of established general science, basic medical, dental and clinical sciences and the practice disciplines, which are integrated to represent the knowledge, skills and values necessary for the best healthcare at the individual and community level. The four streams are Dental Health Sciences, Dental Clinical Practice, Human Biology and General Studies. The streams are integrated laterally during the course of the first year and vertically in subsequent years. Phase III: Dental Clerkship FOURTH and FIFTH YEAR– BDS 4 and 5 The Phase III or Dental Clerkship phase is a two-year integrated full-time clinical rotation in four major dental and medical disciplines, ending with a multidisciplinary general practice clerkship in the sixth year. The teaching elements in this phase are the product of the integration of both the Dental Clinical Practice and Dental and Health Sciences streams. The teaching-learning activities are mainly in the form of multidisciplinary seminars conducted by multi-specialty faculty. This leads to innovative and in-depth training in each of the dental/ medical disciplines and at the same time, students apply this knowledge and skills in general dental practice clinics. A strong emphasis is placed on clinical community dentistry and outreach activities. 8

Students are also required to complete one elective project in a related medical, dental or health sciences specialty in partial fulfillment of the BDS degree. The dental clerkship phase is a student’s training ground for independent learning and the final development of a ‘life-long learner’ and future dentist.
