Dental Medicine The College of The College of Dental Medicine strives to provide an environment conducive to learning and to instill in students appropriate dentistry values and ethics so that future graduates may contribute effectively to serving the community’s dental needs. 4

OBJECTIVES The following objectives of the college of Dental Medicine are that form the foundation of the curriculum are: • Develop a more flexible curriculum structure, one that can respond rapidly to, and reflect, developments in the sciences and practice of dentistry. • Reduce formal contact hours for teaching and provide greater opportunities for self-directed, experiential learning throughout the course. • Facilitate greater opportunities for contextual learning. In the traditional model most of the basic and applied science material was presented in the early years. This material was often not reinforced later in the course where its relevance would have been appreciated more by students. DEPARTMENTS Oral & Craniofacial Health Sciences The Department of Oral and Craniofacial Health Sciences delivers its curriculum using a problem-based learning approach, as well as formal lectures and practical sessions. The Department offers dynamic and innovative learning and teaching opportunities across different fields that represent the core basis of the dental practice. All subjects are integrated to form the basis for each PBL (problem-based learning) case. This occurs concurrently with the development of clinical skills in various technical and clinical areas of dentistry, which begins as soon as a student enters the Dental Clinical Practice stream. General & Specialist Dental Practice The Department of General and Specialist Dental Practice interfaces with the Department of Oral and Craniofacial Health Sciences in developing a motivating environment for dental education. Clinical education for students begins during their first year in the College and full dental clerkship commences in the fourth year. Senior clinical students practice patient care, while being intensively supervised by a team of clinical faculty and instructors who specialize in various dental fields. Dental clinical services are equipped with ultra-modern dental technology, capable of handling any dental case ranging from a routine dental check-up to tooth whitening procedures and advanced dental implant surgery. PROGRAM OF STUDY Phase 1: Foundation Sciences The first year at the College of Dental Medicine prepares students to achieve the level of knowledge necessary to assimilate the more challenging medical and dental science subjects in the later phases. Students are exposed to new learning methods in both the physical and biological sciences in the form of problem-based learning, group projects, critical and lateral thinking and scientific literature research and writing. Self-directed learning philosophy is emphasized and other academic and social activities are conducted to facilitate a smooth transfer from high school education to university campus life. Phase II: Integrated Dental Sciences FIRST, SECOND and THIRD YEAR– BDS 2 ,1 and 3 The Phase II program runs over three years and is composed of teaching-learning activities that are delivered in four streams. A “stream” is an educational structure, organization and philosophy that depicts a collection of established general science, basic medical, dental and clinical sciences and the practice disciplines, which are integrated to represent the knowledge, skills and values necessary for the best healthcare at the individual and community levels. The four streams are Dental Health Sciences, Dental Clinical Practice, Human Biology and General Studies. The streams are integrated laterally during the course of the first year and vertically in subsequent years. Phase III: Dental Clerkship FOURTH and FIFTH YEAR– BDS 4 and 5 The Phase III or Dental Clerkship year is a two-year integrated full-time clinical rotation in four major dental and medical disciplines, ending with a multidisciplinary general practice clerkship in the sixth year. The teaching elements in this phase are the product of the integration of both the Dental Clinical Practice and Dental and Health Sciences streams. The teaching-learning activities are mainly in the formof multidisciplinary seminars conducted by multi-specialty faculty. This leads to innovative and in-depth training in each of the dental/ medical disciplines and at the same time, students apply this knowledge and skills in general dental practice clinics. A strong emphasis is placed on clinical community dentistry and outreach activities. Students are also required to complete one elective project in a related medical, dental or health sciences specialty in partial fulfillment of the BDS degree. The dental clerkship phase is a student’s training ground for independent learning and the final development of a ‘life-long learner’ and future dentist. University Hospital-Sharjah University Hospital - Sharjah, the first teaching hospital of its kind in the UAE, is centrally located alongside the Colleges of Medicine within the University’s Medical and Health Sciences Complex. The hospital is anticipated to become recognized as a leading world-class teaching hospital in the region offering the latest in healthcare, education, and training. The hospital is intended to serve as a major educational component of the University and will provide students studying dentistry with the opportunity to participate in a clinical environment. The teaching hospital has already formed a strong partnership with the Colleges of Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy and a highly collaborative partnership with the College of Health Sciences in the areas of nursing, allied health and health service management. Graduate Programs MASTER OF DENTAL SURGERY ORAL SURGERY Oral surgery is the art and science of surgical dentistry that deals with surgical management of trauma, congenital and acquired diseases of the mouth and its associated structures. The Master of Dental Surgery program in Oral Surgery provide the necessary fundamental sciences and surgical education and skills that would enable the dental practitioner to begin a career in oral surgery. Program Objectives The goals of the MDS-OS program are to enable students to: 1. Develop contemporary knowledge specifically in oral surgery, and relevant areas in dentistry and medicine to enable to make appropriate clinical decisions. 2. Acquire basic and advance skills in patient care, investigation techniques and clinical skills at a level of competency for safe practice. 3. MASTER OF DENTAL SURGERY IN PROSTHODONTICS Prosthodontics is an internationally recognized specialty in clinical dentistry. The scope of this specialty is extensive and concerns with the replacement of missing teeth and oral, face and maxillofacial tissues. The curriculum is designed to develop the clinical, academic, research and communicative skills that will provide for diversified career options. The educational experience is progressive in nature offering increasing responsibilities as residents proceed through the program. Program Objectives the goals of the MDS-Pros program are to enable students to: 1. Develop contemporary knowledge specifically in Prosthodontics, and relevant areas to enable making appropriate clinical decisions 2. Acquire basic and advance skills in patient care, investigation techniques and clinical skills at a level of competency for specialist practice 3. MASTER OF DENTAL SURGERY IN PERIODONTOLOGY The Master of Dental Surgery in Periodontology [MDS (PERIO)] is a full-time, three-year Master Program with Advanced Clinical Training in Periodontology. The program is offered to certified dentists, with a minimum of two years of clinical experience, who seek to improve their competence in theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in Periodontology. The program gives the participant an extensive knowledge and skills in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth and implants. This includes the maintenance of health, function and aesthetics of these structures and tissues, as well as implant site development and their surgical placement and restoration. The resident in this 3-year Master Program attains comprehensive knowledge in Periodontology allowing him/her to examine and evaluate the relevant patient history and clinical conditions and to appropriately design a comprehensive treatment plan, taking into consideration the individual patient needs and expectations. The resident is also trained in the full scope of non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy, including periodontal plastic- and regenerative surgery. In addition, the resident acquires training in the full scope of surgical treatment steps for tooth replacement with implants, including the reconstruction – at a certain extent – of the alveolar process, and also regarding the prosthetic rehabilitation of implants, and the management of peri-implant tissue pathology. Finally, the resident is trained in the evaluation and establishment, execution, and monitoring of an individualized maintenance program. 12

MASTER OF DENTAL SURGERY IN ENDODONTICS The Master of Dental Surgery in Endodontics (MDS-EN) provides the trainee with a broad academic background in biomedical sciences, non-surgical and surgical endodontic principles, in the diagnosis and management of medically compromised and non-compromised patients, fundamental knowledge, principles and clinical skills in the treatment of pulpal and periapical diseases. The growing demand for qualified Endodontists in the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf region warrants designing a post-graduate program at the level of Master›s degree. The College of Dental Medicine at the University of Sharjah is at a strategic position to offer this program, which is perceived as highly needed to manage root canal treatment requiring patients with pulpal and periapical diseases and trauma patients which dentally injured. The Master of Dental Surgery in Endodontics program is committed to the pursue of excellence in clinical skills, research and evidence based-practice and community engagement that would be able to provide competent professional human resource development in healthcare for the UAE that fit the social and cultural needs of the people to build a healthy society. Provide high quality education and training in endodontics that will develop competent endodontists that are fit to serve the community safely and effectively. Program Objectives The goals of the MDS-EN program are to enable students to: 1. Develop contemporary knowledge specifically in endodontics, and relevant areas in dentistry and medicine to enable to make appropriate clinical decisions. 2. Acquire basic and advance skills in patient care, investigation techniques and clinical skills at a level of competency for safe practice. 3. Participate in multidisciplinary team work for effective patient care. 4. Develop and adopt high values in decision making, with contemporary evidence based knowledge and skills. 5. Communicate efficiently and practices the highest level of Ethics and Professionalism 6. Promote as an advocate for health and continue to be a life-long learner. Upon successful completion of the program, which includes a research project and the defense of a Thesis, participants will be awarded the Degree of Master in Dental Surgery in Periodontology [MDS (PERIO)]. Learning outcomes of clinical, theoretical, pedagogical, and scientific nature are assessed throughout the program. At the end of year 3, final course fulfilment is examined in writing and orally, including presentation of several patient cases treated during the residency, and the participant should demonstrate a high level of knowledge and understanding, skills, and approaches in Periodontology. After introductorycourses incomprehensivedentistryandresearchmethodology, focusedspecialization inPeriodontology is obtained through a combination of courses, lectures, seminars, and preclinical/clinical work. The department has a problem-based approach to learning, and encourages self-directed studies in the theory and practice of Periodontology. Participants are exposed to clinical cases with increasing complexity and also collaborate with residents in the national specialization program, Joint seminars with postgraduate students and specialists from other relevant subareas are often offered. EXPERTISE DEVELOPMENT Qualified graduates may seek various positions, including positions of leadership, in areas related to health sciences, where they may provide dental services to both the public or private sectors in police or military services, health related industries, educational establishments, and community settings such as hospitals, health clinics, schools, universities and primary healthcare centers. They may also provide services to rehabilitation centers, elderly homes, social centers, and research or other institutes requiring expertise in the dental fields. GRADUATE STUDIES There are ample opportunities to join graduate programs offering various dental specializations at institutions in the UAE and overseas. Internship Program The internship program aims to provide interns with further development of knowledge, skills and attitudes common to all branches of dentistry. The continuum of training and education begins as an undergraduate and continues after qualification over the practicing career. Internship training program is usually undertaken immediately following qualification and has been defined as the structured further development of knowledge, skills and attitudes common to all branches of the dental profession which will provide a basis for informed career choice and improved patient care. A consistent and high standard of postgraduate dental education is essential to sustain and improve patient care. Admission Requirements 20

MAKING THE GRADE Students with a minimum overall average of 85% on the UAE Secondary School Scientific Certificate or its equivalent, as approved by the Ministry of Education, may apply for admission to the College of Dental Medicine. IGCSE, GCSE, GCE Students are required to present certificates indicating a minimum of 12 years of schooling. All applicants must have taken the following subjects at the GCSE level with a minimum grade of (BBCCC) or above in any order: Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, English Language, Mathematics (or additional Mathematics or Statistics), Physics. Two A-level grades (B & C) in Biology and Chemistry. AMERICAN-STYLE HIGH SCHOOL Students must have passed grades (10, 11, and 12) and taken a minimum of five (5) subjects in each grade with a minimum grade point average B. Only subjects classified as academic are considered in the calculation of the cumulative grade point average (CGPA). ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TESTS All new students applying to the College of Dental Medicine are required to obtain a passing score in one of the English language proficiency exams recognized by the University of Sharjah. Students may take the institutional TOEFL exam at the University of Sharjah upon registration and must achieve a minimum score of 500. The University of Sharjah also accepts a minimum of 61 on the international iBT TOEFL (Internet-based exam), a minimum of 73 on the International TOEFL CBT (computer-based exam), or a minimum of 5.0 on the academic IELTS exam provided that the student’s test score certificate is still in effect. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS Students in the University’s clinical programs are required be immunized for tuberculosis (TB) and Hepatitis B and will have the opportunity to arrange for such vaccinations at the University. Students are, however, encouraged to arrange for their own vaccinations and to provide appropriate documentation as proof of immunization. • The college of Dental Medicine are running an Australian-based curriculum, which is five years in duration plus a foundation year. • Third and fourth year students can undergo their summer training overseas.
