Furthermore, students are required to take a number of advanced elective courses in some of the major subject areas of computing to satisfy accreditation depth requirements in computer science. Bachelor of Science in Information Technology – Multimedia The Information Technology Multimedia (IT Multimedia) program provides a blend of multimedia digital technology and creative arts education through various subjects such as computer animation and video effects, game design and development, graphic design, 3D visualization, human computer interaction, and e-commerce. Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems The department of Information Systems offers a B.Sc. degree in Business Information Systems (BIS). BIS is the application of information technology to support business activities. It includes the planning, development, management, and use of information technology tools to help people perform business processes related to information processing and management. The Business Information Systems (BIS) major integrates the study of information technology (IT) with the study of business to equip students with a solid foundation in business and management to prepare them as IT professionals responsible for developing and managing business information systems. Career opportunities in this exciting and dynamic field include positions as information systems analysts, business analysts, database developers, database administrators, website developers, and project manager among others. The BISS discipline brings together the various business areas of information technology and quantitative analytical techniques. This program provides the theory and methodology to analyze, design, implement, and manage an organization’s information technology and systems. The Department of Information Systems is keenly aware of the technological developments and dynamic changes that characterize today’s world. These changes pose significant challenges for BIS graduates. Our program helps our students keep abreast of the latest IT developments and market changes. To maintain the currency of its program, through a process of continuous development, the department has recently updated its degree program by including within its curriculum a heavy dose of practice-driven components. 6 Computer Science Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is a systematic study of algorithmic processes that create, describe, and transform information. The Computer Science program is designed to equip students with a solid foundation in the field of computing as well as practical experience with a variety of computer applications. ABET accredited The field of computer science is highly dynamic and the Computer Science department develops and enhances its curriculum continuously to cope with and accommodate our rapidly changing world. The Department of Computer Science offers a world-class program that thoroughly prepares students for advanced careers within the computer industry. The department has seen rapid growth since its establishment and thus exhibits strengths in information retrieval, robotics, artificial intelligence, databases, data mining, computer vision, software engineering, computer graphics, theoretical computer science, networking, and multimedia technologies. The Department of Computer Science is part of the College of Computing and Informatics and offers a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science. It aims to accomplish the following: • Provide students with a broad knowledge of Computer Science. • Develop students’ abilities in analyzing, designing, implementing, and testing complete software systems.

UNPARALLELED RESOURCES Most of the courses in our department require hands-on experience. The department has dedicated a considerable number of laboratories, equipped with state-of-theart computers and resources, to give students practical experience. In addition, the University provides its own computing facilities. Networking: Departmental computing resources are distributed across twelve different general labs, three specialized labs, faculty and staff offices and one resource room. All equipment is networked through a high-speed 100 Mbps Ethernet connection, and is connected to the University-wide network and to the Internet through highspeed access connections. Equipment: Departmental equipment is considerable and includes 250 Windows-based PCs with stat of the art Intel micro processors. The department also operates two MAC labs, which contain 50 workstations. Networking Lab: The CS Department has two labs on the men’s and women’s campuses, especially designed and equiped for computer network experiments. Faculty in the Department of Computer Science have won a variety of honours and awards over the years, including regional, national and higher education awards and honours. Our faculty and graduate students consistently produce research that has been published in high-impact journals. Our students, both graduate and undergraduate, excel on national and international platforms. For instance, several of our graduate students have been given scholarships to continue their higher studies in top international universities, and many of students have been employed by leading local and international companies, such Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, and Etisalat.

There is a growing demand on the part of employers for multimedia graduates with broad training. In addition to a strong broad foundation, this program offers a blend of digital technologies and creative arts and introduces you to a wide range of multimedia design, production, management, and evaluation skills. 10 Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering Computer Engineering is a hybrid study of basic electrical engineering, modern electronics, and computer hardware and software. This includes the design of the electronics (hardware) of the computer, the design of the software (system and applications software), and the interconnection of computer systems into a network. Computer engineers provide the key building blocks in our modern information technology-based society from improved software systems and high-speed computers to advanced integrated circuits (ICs) and next-generation communication networks. As you advance in the program, you will study required departmental courses covering the main areas of computer engineering which include programming, data structures and algorithm design, operating systems, digital design, microprocessor design, computer architecture, networking, information security, and embedded systems design. These courses give the computer engineering student a strong foundation in the various disciplines of computer engineering. Students receive theoretical information in weekly lectures and tutorial sessions. In addition, most of the core courses include practical hands-on experience in a laboratory environment. 12 Bachelor of Science in Business information system The Department of BIS offers a 123-credit hour B.Sc. program, which is designed to provide a balance between theory and practice and give students the opportunity to develop IT skills through hands-on problem solving and laboratory practice. The BIS program focuses on the tools, techniques, and technologies used in the analysis, design, development, and management of information systems. The program includes the following areas of discipline: Computer programming, systems analysis and design, database management, business networking and telecommunications, and Internet computing.

Unparalleled Resources: The BIS program at the University of Sharjah is staffed by a group of dedicated and highly qualified faculty members who possess education and training from various leading international institutions. The BIS degree program has been re-structured and streamlined to better equip its graduates with the skills and tools in high demand in today’s business world. The program enjoys modern computer laboratories equipped with the latest software tools required to support the teaching needs of specific courses. Additionally, the University is currently completing the construction of two new libraries housed with state-of-the-art library resources for the University community. Program of Study: The BIS degree programrequires the completion of 123 credit hours, of which 24 credit hours areUniversity requirements, 54 credit hours are college requirements, and 45 credit hours are program requirements. The program requirements (45 credit hours) break down as follows: Specialization compulsory core courses (24 credits), specialization electives (6 credits), and a chosen minor (15 credits). Approved minors include Accounting, Finance, Public Sector Management, Marketing, Management, Supply Chain Management/Logistics, Human Resource Management, and Economics. The specialization compulsory requirements include the following 8 courses: Database Management, Business Programming, Systems Analysis and Design, Business Data Telecom and Networks, Information Security, Project Management, Internship in BIS and Project in BIS. The specialization electives (2 courses} are chosen from the following list of electives: Advanced Business Programming, Customer Relationship Management Systems, Big Data and Business Intelligence, Enterprise Systems and Decision Support Systems.
14 SCIENCES MASTER PROGRAMS Master of Science in Computer Science The Computer Science Graduate Program is designed to further explore the fields of computing and open doors to leadership positions in companies and to doctoral studies at internationally recognized universities. As a student in the M.Sc. Computer Science program, you will develop theoretical knowledge of computer science and problem-solving and analytical skills. The Department of Computer Science offers two types of M.Sc. programs: Thesis-based and Project-based. Thesis-Based M.Sc. Program The Department of Computer Science offers an accredited thesis-based M.Sc. program. In the thesis-based M.Sc. program, students are required to complete 34 credit hours as follows: • Three 3 credit graduate core courses • Research methodology course (1 credit) • Five 3 credit graduate elective courses • The thesis (9 credits) to be conducted in a specific area The thesis consists of a thorough integrated literature survey in a specific area, a critical analysis of approaches and results, and a discussion of areas requiring further work. In addition, it includes a report on the research undertaken by the student. The thesis report must constitute sufficient evidence of the student’s mastery of the research area. Further, an examination committee will review the thesis to determine whether or not it meets the standards set forth by the University, and will conduct an oral examination to test the candidate’s knowledge of the thesis subject and related fields.
