Aiming to enrich awareness and public knowledge of the developments, importance, and impact of astronomy, space sciences, and technology, SAASST organized a "Galaxies Workshop" on Sunday, May 9th, 2021. This is to achieve the Academy's goals by its Founder His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah. His Highness established SAASST to serve and educate the community in all fields of space sciences, be a global leader in scientific research, and solidify the UAE's position as a scientific center at the regional and global levels. SAASST conducted the Workshop using the remote communications platform (Zoom) to adhere to the UAE's relevant authorities' precautionary measures due to COVID-19.
The Workshop's program included an introduction into the formation of galaxies and the extragalactic zoo by Prof. Ilias Fernini, SAASST Deputy General Director for Research Laboratories and Scientific Projects. Prof. Mashhoor Al Wardat, SAASST Deputy General Director for Academic Programs and the Sharjah Astronomical Observatory, introduced the Milky Way Galaxy. The program also included lectures by Dr. Antonios Manousakis, SAASST High Energy Astrophysics Laboratory, on "Multiwavelength Observation of Galaxies," and Mr. Mohammed Rihan, SAASST Radio Astronomy Laboratory, on the "Classification of Galaxies."
Through organizing lectures, workshops, and various specialized training programs, SAASST seeks to support talented students by providing the tools and expertise necessary to support the development of their knowledge and capabilities in this field. Besides, it focuses on public awareness through planetarium shows, space exhibitions, and specialized summer camps.
In its endeavor to achieve His Highness's vision of paying attention to scientific research that serves and develops society, SAASST is one of the most comprehensive centers in the country and the region. It serves the fields of education and scientific research and astronomy projects, space science, and technology.
