His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, launched the Human Genetics and Stem Cells Laboratory at the College of Sciences. This with the aim of serving the scientific research students and researchers of the University in the fields of genetics, stem cells, and genetic developments in animals. Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, attended the launch along with Prof. Nouar Tabet, Dean of the College of Sciences, and Prof. Ismail Saadoun, Head of Department of Applied Biology.
During the opening ceremony, the audience watched an introductory video about the laboratory and its facilities and equipment. Dr. Abdullah Al-Mutery, Assistant Professor of Genetics at the College of Sciences, accompanied the delegation on a tour of the laboratory, providing an explanation to the Chancellor and the attendees about the devices and equipment, how to utilize them, as well as the laboratory's services for students and researchers.
The laboratory focuses on scientific research in the field of genetics, specifically in genetic mutations such as deafness, autism and how to diagnose them accurately, in addition to work on chromosome studies on diseases spread in the country because of the different structure of the chromosomes. The laboratory also helps researchers in studies of stem cells and modifying human organs infected by a number of diseases through the use of stem cells to treat them. In the field of genes at the animal level, the laboratory assists researchers in studies of genetic development and comparison of genetic makeup among different animals. It also offers workshops and trainings specialized in genetics sciences.
