The University of Sharjah's Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Department at the College of Engineering celebrated the Nuclear Science Week in collaboration with international celebrations of the occasion. This with the aim of spreading awareness and knowledge of peaceful uses of nuclear energy to faculty, administrative and technical staff members, and student at the University, as well as high school students.
The event included a lecture by Dr. Walid Metwally titled "Atomic and Nuclear Energy - Uses beyond Imagination", in which he explained the history of nuclear energy since its discovery and how it has evolved and uses it to the present. He then talked about the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in most areas of life.
The audience then toured the exhibition accompanying the event, which aimed to raise awareness of human uses in the peaceful fields of nuclear energy, and presented a set of devices used to detect radioactive sources, as well as devices to measure the proportion of radiation in the human body. The American Society of Nuclear Energy the student branch at the University of Sharjah presented a number of miniature models of nuclear energy compared to the quantities of energy produced, and a number of students of the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering gave some visual presentations introducing the uses of nuclear energy through virtual reality technology. The events also included introductory tours for high school students to the nuclear engineering laboratories at the University where technical engineers explained to the students about the devices in laboratories that are used in the educational process and research at the University.
