Under the patronage and attendance of His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, the Sustainability Office launched the project "2020 Year of Sustainability." This initiative aims to consolidate the concept of sustainability in the University community and working to integrate it in the courses and apply it in a practical way in order to conserve energy and resources. This coming from the importance of sustainability and its significant role in the advancement of societies and the preservation of environmental, human and economic resources, and in line with the UAE's vision 2021. Prof. Elsiddig Ahmed ElMustafa El Sheikh, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, attended the ceremony along with Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies; Mr. William Matt Easdown, Vice Chancellor for Administrative and Financial Affairs; Dr. Imad Alsyouf, Director of the Sustainability Office; and a number of College Deans and Department Heads.
The Chancellor congratulated the members of the University's family on the ranking of the University of Sharjah as one of the top three among the UAE universities according to the Times World University Ranking 2020. He pointed out that the subject of sustainability has been placed at the top of its priorities in its five-year strategic plan: 2019-2024, in order to integrate sustainability in the culture and traditions of the University community. He also directed the University's Colleges and the various centers and departments working in the University participate in sustainability activities in order to enhance the university's leading role in the fields of sustainability.
Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, highlighted the importance of the University of Sharjah efforts in sustainability and the significance of its ranking as the top University in the UAE for the second year in a row in the rankings of universities "GreenMetrics", which is concerned with the areas of sustainable development and adherence to the standards of clean environment. He also mentioned the University of Sharjah being granted the Sharjah Award for Sustainability and the Dubai Award For Sustainable Transport. He added that the University of Sharjah will organize the 12th Sharjah International Conference on Sustainable and Renewable Energy for Environmental Protection next November.
Mr. William Matt Easdown gave an overview of future initiatives related to sustainability and conservation of natural resources on campus, and ways to implement this through a number of initiatives to be implemented within the current strategic plan. Dr. Imad Alsyouf talked about the vision and objectives of the Sustainability Office, in terms of promoting sustainability awareness and introducing a culture of sustainability for students, staff and faculty; holding courses, workshops and public seminars; and ensuring effective partnerships with national and international organizations to achieve excellence in sustainability. He then talked about the 20 sustainability groups each of which working on a different area to cover all aspects of the University and link it to the concept of sustainability. Finally, a number of leaders from sustainability departments: Dr. Salah Bendak, Dr. Anu Randad, Engineer Amer Yousef, Dr. Faker Gharaibeh, and Ms. Samira Shehadeh, gave presentations of the initiatives and achievements made by the departments they supervise.
