07 / 06 / 2024

A Master's thesis defense titled: "Analysis and Forecasting of Geomagnetic Storms Using Machine Learning," was successfully defended at the headquarters of the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST) of the University of Sharjah (UoS), by the Researcher Alya Saeed Bin Ashour from the Department of Applied Physics and Astronomy, College of Sciences at UoS, under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad Mubasshir,  Assistnat Professor from the Department of Electrical Engineering, College of Engineering, UoS.

The thesis aimed to study and forecast geomagnetic storms to reduce their effects on technologies such as satellites and power grids, select the best indices to develop geomagnetic storm prediction model, study the effect of geomagnetic storms on Total electron content (TEC) over the Arabian Peninsula, and forecast the strength of geomagnetic storms by calculating the Dst index based on a number of space based and ground based data sources.

The examining committee from UoS 's College of Sciences included Prof. Mashhoor Al-Wardat, Professor of Astrophysics, and Director of Academic Affairs at SAASST, and Prof. Gehad Sadiek, Professor, Depertment of Applied Physics and Astronomy. In addition to Prof. Andrea V.Maccio, Director, Center for Astrophysics and Space Science, and Professor of Physics at the New York University Abu Dhabi, who acted as the external examiner. The committee decided to accept the master's thesis of the student and recommended granting her a Master of Science in Astronomy and Space Sciences.
