The Sharjah Sport Council in collaboration with the University of Sharjah launch the Professional Diploma in Sports Media and Communications program during a press release held on Tuesday February 19th, 2019. This program is a joint initiative leading to the preparation of national sports cadres to achieve a broad and comprehensive advancement in the sports sector. This initiative embodies the agreement of cooperation and partnership between the two institutions and aims to launch a number of activities and joint initiatives where more than 30 students and scholars representing 14 institutions and sports clubs from Sharjah participate.
Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, President of the Sharjah Sport Council, attended the launch along with H.E. Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah; H.E. Issa Hilal Al Hazami, Secretary-General of the Sharjah Sports Council; Prof. Radhi Al Zubaidi, Director of the Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development at the University; Saeed Al-Ajal, Director of Community Activities Department; Nabil Ashour, Director of the Department of Institutional Support; Zakya Suhail Al-Mashroukh, Acting Director of the Government Communication Department; and Dr. Mohamed Abdelazim, Director of the Center for Strategic Studies and Organizational Excellence at the Council.
Sheikh Saqr Al Qasimi pointed out that the program is especially important for its support and enhancement of the Council's process through building bridges of communication and partnership with various institutions following the vision and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, and His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, along with Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. He thanked them for their support and sponsorship of developments and initiatives in all sectors in the Emirate including education, health, sports and others.
He added that the launch of this program is an embodiment of the cooperation agreement between the two institutions, which aims to organize various initiatives to serve the community as the program contains many new topics related to the field of sports media and communication. These topics include sports media and media management skills, journalism, electronic sports media, social media management skills, electronic and digital journalism, technical analysis and sports commentary skills. It is a continuation of previous efforts aimed at empowering young people at the sports and professional level and achieving their goals and aspirations towards preparing sports leaders in various disciplines.
His Excellency the Chancellor of the University confirmed that the launch of this diploma program in Sports Media and Communications for the Sharjah Sports Council is part of the mission of the University of developing and serving the surrounding community that His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah set. This program is not only for the sport environment in Sharjah, he continued, but also for the sports media who have a great duty to communicate the sports reality in Sharjah and what it seeks to accomplish at the local, regional and international levels.
H.E. Issa Hilal Al Hazami commended the collaboration with the University of Sharjah and indicated that the program includes a 108 study hours delivered by professional academics in sports media and communications as well as experts in the field of media, sports journalism, along with a number of media personalities, critics and analysts. It includes, he added, nine focus areas, which are: one, sports media and communications that covers concepts, ethics, and careers in the field. Two, media careers in sports institutions covering media coordinators' duties and management basics. The third focus area is advertising, marketing, planning of media and advertising campaigns and management of technical aspects. The fourth area focuses on journalism writing, while the fifth focuses on electronic sports media skills and TV filming and productions. The sixth focuses on crisis management, and the sevenths covers management and applications of modern means of communication in the sports field. The eighth focus area is electronic journalism, graphic design, and photography, while the ninth addresses sports technical analysis skills.
For his part, Prof. Al Zubaidi stated that this program is the first of its kind in the country and is unique in that it focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects as students will submit a project at the end of the program.
The expected learning outcomes of the program are to be able to explain the nature and concept of the characteristics of sports media and communication, to identify the career options in sports institutions, to identify the different forms of sports media, to use the different press forms of the sports journalism with precise skill, analysis and evaluation of the public opinion, acquisition of technical analysis and commentary skills, analysis and management of ethical and social issues in sports media.
