His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, has always been keen on promoting the Emirate of Sharjah's stature in the field of knowledge and culture. He has exerted significant and purposeful efforts in creating a cultural environment appropriate for citizens from various nationalities. His Highness has always been aware of the role of people with disabilities; therefore, they are engaged in the continuing development process.
Since the early 1980s, His Highness has been concerned with providing people with disabilities with guidance, appropriate education and convenient job opportunities at different government organizations in the Emirate. His Highness mandated developing the infrastructure, making adjustments and providing different premises with necessary facilities as appropriate to help the disabled integrate into society.
Education is an essential right for everybody and His Highness has been heedful of the right to education of people with disabilities, and so, schools of the Emirate of Sharjah have be opened for pupils with mobility and visual impairments. Hearing impaired pupils have also joined school during the past ten years.
In order to maintain this progression of providing education to people with disabilities, every possible means and resource have to be utilized for supporting and motivating them and helping them complete higher education. To this end, the University of Sharjah has founded appropriate facilities and equipment to enable people with disabilities to receive higher education. At the end of every semester, there are students with disabilities graduating with excellent academic achievement. It is not surprising! Whenever opportunities are made available, good results will be realized.
The University of Sharjah is a well-known academic institution of high reputation at the international level. It attracts students from around the world. The University takes into consideration the needs of male and female students with disabilities. Therefore, it has cooperated with Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services to establish: Resource Center for People with Disabilities which reports to the Chancellor. This Center established a guidance and integration policies to ensure providing educational opportunities within a competitive environment, where all students are treated equally. The Center has also created a comprehensive system attending to every individual stage, from the process of admission and registration to graduation and career advice.
