Degree Overview
The College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD) is a community that fosters creativity and promotes innovation in partnership with society. We endeavor to engage in art and design within the public realm. Our uniqueness stems from interacting with various public and semi-public entities, promoting art and design, culture, and heritage, the visual and tactile, to enhance and inform our environment, while engaging the community in a meaningful dialog. This discourse exposes students to the public realm early in their careers while simultaneously allowing them the opportunity to interact and share their passion outside campus. Similarly, our partners are eager to interact with our students, valuing their inventive spirit while offering them a forum to soar to new artistic heights; a collaboration that is uniquely of and from within Sharjah.
The Master of Arts in Curatorial Practice (MACP), the first graduate degree offered by the Department of Fine Arts, is a practice-based degree that emphasizes the development of innovative curatorial expertise, blending a dynamic and interdisciplinary approach to exhibition-making, cultural programming, and public education. The Program prepares students to become leading professionals in the expanding global curatorial landscape, particularly within the UAE and the MENASA region. Through an experiential learning model, the curriculum integrates theoretical and practice-based knowledge across four key areas: history and theory, practicum, research and writing, and a research project. It embraces contemporary curatorial practices while foregrounding local and regional heritage, enabling students to curate exhibitions and promote programs that are both globally informed and deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of the region. Courses shall be delivered by a diverse faculty with extensive experience and specialties in various areas of curatorship. The intent is to prepare graduates for the extensive array of positions offered in specialized museums, galleries, cultural institutions, and art centers.
Supported by partnerships with leading local institutions like the Sharjah Art Foundation and Sharjah Museums Authority, the Program fosters critical thinking, research, and practical engagement, equipping graduates with the skills and attitudes necessary to shape the evolving art and culture sectors.
