    SAASST Welcomes UAE University Delegation

The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST) at the University of Sharjah has welcomed a high-profile delegation from the United Arab Emirates University, led by H.E. Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Adviser to the UAE President and Chancellor of the University, and Prof. Ghaleb Ali Al Breiki, Acting Vice Chancellor. They were received by H.E. Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, and Director General of the SAASST, alongside several vice-chancellors, deans, and senior university officials.

The visit aimed to explore the academy’s cutting-edge facilities, including its space science laboratories, optical observatories, and the planetarium which play a vital role in advancing research, education, and public understanding of astronomy.

During their tour, the delegation explored permanent exhibitions showcasing theories on the origins and evolution of the universe, along with an exceptional collection of meteorites from around the world. They also attended a screening of the scientific documentary, “The Value of Religion at the Sharjah Planetarium”. The documentary presents a cosmological narrative beginning with the Big Bang, drawing on verses from the Holy Quran to highlight the scientific miracles within the Muslim holy book.

In a statement to the attendees, Prof. Al Naimiy underscored the importance of the visit, describing it as a step toward strengthening collaboration between the two institutions and an endeavor that aligns with the UAE’s growing ambitions in space exploration. He noted that since its founding in May 2015 as an implantation of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, and Ruler of Sharjah, and with the support of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, the academy has evolved into a leading hub for research in astronomy and space sciences. It is now home to advanced research laboratories, optical and radio observatories, and facilities for monitoring both natural and artificial space debris.

H.E. Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh praised the academy’s achievements, describing it as a world-class institution that strengthens the UAE’s position as a scientific center of excellence at both regional and global levels. He expressed pride in the nation’s commitment to establishing such forward-looking educational institutions inspired by the vision of the Ruler of Sharjah. Nusseibeh emphasized that the SAASST’s ongoing efforts to innovate and enrich academic excellence support the UAE’s national space ambitions. He also highlighted the role of the National Space Science and Technology Center at UAE University, established to advance research and academic contributions in line with the country’s strategic objectives for space science and engineering. Through this collaboration, he said, the two institutions aim to cultivate a vibrant environment for creativity, research, and innovation, preparing future generations to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s vision for space exploration and technological progress.
