The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST), affiliated with the University of Sharjah, has launched Global Space Week 2025 under the theme “Living in Space,” aiming to raise public awareness of space’s vital role in human life and to promote scientific and astronomical culture across society. The event runs from October 4 to 10 and offers an interactive hands-on experience in space and astronomy to spread knowledge and contribute to building a sustainable future.

His Excellency Professor Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Director of SAASST, opened the week’s activities with a speech that emphasized the academy’s commitment to supporting national priorities in innovation, scientific research, and space exploration. He noted the significance of marking two landmark events in space history: the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957 and the 1967 United Nations Outer Space Treaty, which established a global framework for the peaceful use of space. He also added that the academy’s advanced facilities enable students and researchers to engage in distinguished scientific experiences while fostering public awareness of space sciences.

Fatima Mohamed Alkhateri, Director of the Sharjah Planetarium, highlighted the importance of involving all community sectors, including researchers and students, in the Global Space Week to deepen their understanding of space’s impact on daily life. She outlined the academy’s educational and interactive programs, including specialized lectures, practical scientific workshops, new astronomical shows, and interactive stations simulating the challenges of living in space. These initiatives offer visitors direct engagement with the latest developments in space science and technology, inspiring innovation and fostering a generation capable of contributing to the UAE’s promising space exploration.

In a significant development during the week, SAASST signed a cooperation agreement with the Emirates Astronomy Society (EAS), sealing a partnership to enhance collaboration in space sciences and astronomy. The agreement, signed by Professor Al Naimiy and Ibrahim Al Jarwan, President of the Society, aims to activate joint scientific and cultural programs, support research and observation, promote joint events, exchange expertise, develop educational materials, establish partnerships with astronomy and science clubs, and provide a dedicated space for the EAS within the academy.

This year’s events include new live presentations at the Sharjah Planetarium exploring space environments, alongside lectures by leading specialists in space and astronomy. Professor Mashhoor Al Wardat, Director of Academic Affairs at SAASST, presented an overview of Global Space Week’s theme, stressing its role in enhancing the public’s understanding of space sciences and encouraging youth participation in scientific activities. Ammar Essa, Director of Observatory Management, delivered a lecture on The Habitability of Space and the Search for Exoplanets.

Throughout the week, the SAASST will organize a variety of scientific and astronomical activities, including special shows at the Sharjah Planetarium, interactive stations such as “Imagine Other Worlds” and “The Time Capsule,” workshops on astrobiology, planetary habitability, the use of AI in classifying astronomical images, as well as specialized lectures covering topics like interstellar travel and high-energy cosmic radiation. Practical training sessions simulating the life of astronauts will also be provided to deepen the public’s understanding of space living.
