His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi

In the sunlit sands of Sharjah, a grand vision took root under the wise gaze of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, and Founder of the University of Sharjah. With a passion for pioneering scientific endeavors, he dreamed of a beacon that would illuminate the stars for generations to come.

In 2013, this dream began to take shape when His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Professor of Astronomy and Space Science, guided by His Highness’s directive, sparked the creation of a specialized center for space science and technology. With royal encouragement, resources poured in, and collaboration with local and international companies crafted the foundation of what would become a scientific marvel.

Through the Ruler’s steadfast visits and unwavering oversight, the dream crystallized on May 7, 2015, with the grand opening of the Sharjah Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences—later evolving into the prestigious Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST). This shining edifice, adorned with the Sharjah Planetarium, cutting-edge laboratories, optical and radio observatories, rose as a testament to ambition. Since its birth, SAASST has woven a legacy of excellence, publishing groundbreaking research, observing celestial wonders, and hosting vibrant conferences and outreach events that inspire the curious.

The Academy has proudly celebrated remarkable achievements for the UAE in the fields of astronomy and space sciences. As a testament to its commitment to advancing knowledge in these areas, the Academy succeeded in registering and representing the country in the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 27th August, 2018, an esteemed global organization dedicated to the promotion and study of astronomy. Several distinguished scientists from the UAE have also registered with the IAU, contributing to the nation’s growing presence in the scientific community. In a notable recognition, a star in the sky has been named "Sharjah," while the planet it orbits is called "Burjeel." Another historic milestone arrived on January 3, 2023, when SAASST launched its first CubeSat, "Sharjah-Sat 1," a bold step into the cosmos, with plans for a constellation of satellites in partnership with global innovators—heralding a new era of discovery under Sharjah’s starry skies.
