University of Sharjah Showcases Arabic as a Foreign Language Teaching Model to Visiting Indonesian Delegation
H.E. Prof. Esmaeldin Agamy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah received a high-level academic and diplomatic delegation from Indonesia led by H.E. Denny Lesmana, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Dubai. The delegation included Dr. Safwan Mataf, President of Darunnajah University, along with representatives of the Indonesian consulate and members of its advisory and academic councils. Also in attendance were the University’s vice chancellors, directors of institutes and research centers, the Director of the International Relations Office, and the Director of the Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Muslim and Arab Sciences.
Welcoming the guests, H.E. Prof. Esameldin Agamy stressed that the University of Sharjah (UoS) follows a clear strategy of building strong international academic partnerships based on knowledge exchange, complementarity of expertise, and service to shared scientific and cultural priorities. He outlined the University’s academic journey, its research achievements, and its advanced standing in global rankings, emphasizing that Sharjah places particular importance on teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speakers as it represents a cultural and intellectual asset that promotes cross-cultural dialogue and mutual understanding between peoples.
The Chancellor affirmed the University’s commitment to expanding its network of international partnerships with distinguished academic institutions, especially those that share its interest in the Arabic language and Islamic culture. He highlighted opportunities to collaborate on the design and delivery of Arabic-language programs for non-Arabic speakers built on best educational practices, with the aim of preparing qualified graduates capable of promoting the Arabic language and culture in their own countries.
For his part, the Consul General of Indonesia in Dubai expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and praised the University of Sharjah’s distinguished academic reputation. He said Indonesia values this academic cooperation with the University of Sharjah and views it as an important opportunity to support Arabic language teaching in the country, and to train students and teachers through specialized programs that enhance cultural and scientific ties between the two nations.
Discussions focused on several areas of cooperation, particularly in the field of teaching Arabic as a foreign language. The partners explored hosting students from Darunnajah University for training visits to develop their language skills, as well as designing programs to train and qualify teachers and faculty members specializing in Arabic language instruction, thereby supporting the shared educational objectives of both institutions.
The University of Sharjah was also invited to participate in specialized scientific conferences organized by Darunnajah University. The two sides further discussed potential future collaboration in sustainable and renewable energy, artificial intelligence and computing, and medical and health sciences, signaling a broader agenda that extends well beyond language into cutting-edge research domains.
