Changing Smiles, Changing Lives The University of Sharjah Hosts the 13th International Students’ Dental Conference (ISDC)
His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah inaugurated the 13th International Students’ Dental Conference (ISDC). Organized by the UoS Dental Students Association, the conference, which lasted for two days, was held at the medical colleges and the University Dental Hospital. The conference brought together a diverse group of researchers, professionals, and students from 30 countries to share their knowledge and expertise, discuss recent developments in the field, and explore new trends in dental education and practice.
The inauguration ceremony commenced with the national anthem, followed by a recitation of verses from the Holy Qur'an. In his opening address, Prof. Qutayba Hamid, Vice Chancellor for Medical and Health Sciences Colleges and Dean of the College of Medicine, expressed his profound gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the founder of the University of Sharjah, and to His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, for their continued support and patronage of the University, particularly the colleges of medical and health sciences. He also extended his thanks to His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, for his presence at the conference and his ongoing support for the University's various activities. He also warmly welcomed the speakers, students, and dentists participating in the conference.
Prof. Qutayba emphasized the significant advancements in the field of dentistry, highlighting its essential role in oral health. He noted that the conference provides a valuable opportunity for dental students and professionals to exchange experiences, expand their knowledge, and learn about the latest developments in the field. It also allows them to hear from experts and international speakers from various countries, as well as explore the cutting-edge technologies being used globally in the field of dentistry.
Prof. Qutayba emphasized that the conference is exceptional and unique, as it is entirely organized by students. He noted that the event is not merely an academic conference but also a platform for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and cultures, as well as an opportunity to build an international network of connections. These networks, he added, will benefit students in their future careers after graduation. Furthermore, Prof. Qutayba encouraged the students to make the most of their time at the University, urging them to seize this opportunity to enrich their knowledge and broaden their experiences while enjoying their time on campus.
For her part, Prof. Sausan Al Kawas, Acting Dean of the College of Dentistry, affirmed that the conference is a pioneering scientific platform that reflects the University's commitment to providing the best educational and training opportunities for its students. She stated that what sets this conference apart from other events is its ability to bring together experts who share their knowledge and expertise on a range of topics, including the latest technologies in dental implants, digital orthodontics, and the use of AI in medical education. Prof. Al Kawas added that the conference offers a valuable opportunity for students to engage directly with experts and stay updated on the latest developments in their field.
She also pointed out that the participation of local and regional universities in the competitive events fosters a spirit of academic competition and knowledge exchange among students. Concluding her speech, the Acting Dean expressed her pride in the efforts of the Dental Students Association for organizing the conference under the theme Changing Smiles, Changing Lives; a theme she described as reflective of the noble mission of the dental profession in serving the community and improving the patients’ quality of life. She expressed her hope that the conference would achieve its goals of enriching the scientific knowledge and practical experiences of the students.
During the opening ceremony, attendees were shown a short video about the University of Sharjah followed by an introductory session led by Dr. Ibrahim Aziz, lecturer at the College of Dentistry and the conference organizer, and Majd Haidar, President of the Dental Students Association. They provided an overview of the conference program, which included 6 lectures, 15 workshops, and 15 research papers delivered by a host of international and local experts and researchers.
Dr. Ahmed Jamleh delivered the first talk on Predictable Fiber Removal in Root Canal Treatment, followed by Dr. Walid Ziad, who delivered a lecture on Advanced Jaw Orthognathic Surgery. Dr. Amir Haj Hammo delivered a talk titled “Ceramic Veneer Preparation: Predicting Outcomes," while Dr. Ayman Obaidat introduced the innovative topic of temporary bone retainers and the temporomandibular joint. Other sessions included an exciting presentation on the use of artificial intelligence in dental education, delivered by Dr. Adel Moufti. The sessions concluded by Dr. Mohammad Abu Haj, who presented on the immediate implant placement in the aesthetic zone.
In addition, the conference program included competitive events, such as debates between the participating universities, a debate between students from the University of Sharjah and students from Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, as well as a poster competition and oral research sessions. During the closing ceremony speakers and sponsors were honored, and winners of the various competitions received their awards.
