University of Sharjah Soars to 38th Globally in 2025 UI GreenMetric Sustainability Rankings
The University of Sharjah has recorded a major leap in its journey of excellence, climbing 29 places to rank 38th globally in the 2025 edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. The classification, which assesses the world’s most environmentally committed institutions, included 1,745 participating universities this year.
The University also secured first place in the United Arab Emirates for the ninth consecutive year, while achieving first place in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the wider Arab world. underscoring its growing influence in sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
Marking the achievement, H.E. Prof. Esameldin Agamy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, extended his congratulations to H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah. Prof. Agamy said the milestone reflects Sheikh Sultan’s clear vision, guidance, and unwavering support, which continue to elevate the University’s global standing.
Prof. Agamy further noted that the 2025 ranking reflects exceptional gains across multiple indicators. He explained that UoS ranked fourth in the world for infrastructure, including the quality and resilience of its facilities and their ability to respond to crises and emergencies. It was placed sixteenth globally in effective waste management, eleventh in water management and conservation, and twelfth in education, research, and student activities related to sustainability. The University was also listed among the world’s top ten young institutions under 50 years old.
In addition, Prof. Agamy stressed that this progress is the outcome of a comprehensive strategy grounded in innovation, creativity, and the adoption of international best practices in sustainability and scientific research. He explained that the UoS’s approach stems from a strong commitment to environmental and social responsibility. It prioritizes efficient energy use, reducing the carbon footprint and responsible management of natural resources. This strategy includes investment in research focused on environmentally friendly technologies and innovative solutions to challenges in energy and water. Moreover, sustainability principles have been integrated into academic curricula and research, while campus facilities continue to expand their reliance on renewable energy and modern resource-preservation systems. Community initiatives also play a central role, promoting environmental awareness and encouraging public engagement with sustainability issues.
Prof. Agamy concluded his statement by reaffirming the University’s determination to strengthen its global presence and cement its position as a leading institution in sustainability, in line with the vision of Sharjah and the United Arab Emirates for a more sustainable future across all fields.
