Leadership in Sustainability
Commenting, His Excellency, Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of UoS stressed that the University of Sharjah, in accordance with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, is working to adopt the principles of sustainability and adhere to clean environmental standards, pointing out that this issue has become a global priority that requires concerted efforts from all sectors, especially academic institutions.
Prof. Al-Naimiy also added that the University recognizes its responsibility toward the environment and society and strives to integrate a culture of sustainability across all aspects of university life. Since entering the GreenMetric rankings in 2017, UoS has consistently demonstrated excellence, maintaining its position as a leader in sustainability.
UoS Achievements in Subcategories
This year, 1,477 universities participated in the rankings. The University of Sharjah made significant advancements in several key indicators, including being ranked:
- 6th globally in infrastructure as a result of its state-of-the-art facilities, crisis response effectiveness, and green spaces
- 23rd globally in water management
and
- 24th globally in education, research, and student activities related to sustainability.
Sustainability Initiatives
Prof. Al-Naimiy underscored the University’s commitment to achieving sustainable development goals through various initiatives, including:
- investing in research to develop environmentally friendly technologies and innovative solutions for energy and water challenges
- constructing eco-friendly facilities that rely on renewable energy and advanced resource conservation technologies
- incorporating sustainability-focused courses into its academic programs
and
- engaging the community through awareness campaigns, workshops, seminars, and events to promote sustainability.
The University also encourages researchers and students to undertake applied scientific research to address global environmental challenges effectively.
