More than 165 athletes and officials from over 18 countries are expected to take part in the international university sports event.

The University of Sharjah (UoS) is stepping up preparations to host the 2026 FISU World University Championship Powerlifting, an international sporting event scheduled to take place on the University’s campus from November 26 to 30.

The championship will be held under the umbrella of the International University Sports Federation, known as FISU, in cooperation with the UAE Sports Federation for School and Higher Education Institutions. FISU lists Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, as the host city for the championship, with competition scheduled from November 26 through 30, 2026.

University organizing committees and relevant administrative departments are finalizing the technical and logistical preparations for the event. To date, 165 athletes and officials representing more than 18 countries across several continents have confirmed their participation. In addition, the Championship’s Higher Organizing Committee has held a series of meetings to assign responsibilities, provide the required technical and logistical support, and strengthen coordination and the exchange of expertise among the departments involved, with the goal of ensuring full readiness for the event.

Preparations have included comprehensive accommodation, transportation and catering plans for visiting international delegations. The University is also equipping its sports halls with the latest internationally approved devices and equipment, under the supervision of qualified sports professionals and specialists.

Hosting the championship in the United Arab Emirates and Sharjah is intended to showcase the University’s distinctive standing and present an exemplary organizational model that reflects its reputation. The championship builds on the University of Sharjah’s leadership in university powerlifting. UoS played a pioneering role in promoting and establishing the sport across the country’s universities and previously organized the inaugural Asian University Powerlifting Cup in cooperation with the UAE Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation.

By hosting the World University Championship, the University continues its role in attracting and organizing major sporting events and competitions, while strengthening its academic and athletic presence regionally and internationally.
