UoS celebrate Emirati women’s achievements while expanding support for their academic, professional and community leadership.

 

As the United Arab Emirates celebrates Emirati Women’s Day 2026 under the theme, “We Emerge Stronger and Better,” the University of Sharjah (UoS) is highlighting the achievements of Emirati women through a wide-ranging program of initiatives, events and institutional support. The activities reflect the University’s continuing commitment to advancing women’s participation and leadership across academia, research, innovation, sports, entrepreneurship, culture and the arts. They also underscore the University’s efforts to create a workplace and learning environment that supports women as students, researchers, professionals and members of the wider community.

Dr. Amina Almarzooqi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, said the University’s approach aligns with the “Mother of the Nation 50:50 Vision,” a leap toward a bright future in 2075 that seeks to strengthen the pioneering role of Emirati women in shaping the country’s future. The vision builds on more than five decades of progress and achievement under the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU). Dr. Almarzooqi said the vision represents an advanced stage in the journey of Emirati women, focusing on expanding their national and global impact, strengthening their role as active partners in development, and positioning them as an inspiring model for the world.

Dr. Noura Alkarbi, Director of the Office for Women in Research and the University of Sharjah’s representative at the coordination meeting for institutions organized by the General Women’s Union to discuss initiatives marking Emirati Women’s Day 2026, stated that, in line with the outcomes of the coordination meeting and its focus on extending the celebration of Emirati Women’s Day throughout an entire month, as well as launching impactful, sustainable, and measurable initiatives, the University’s Women in Research Forum stands as one of the key initiatives reflecting the University of Sharjah’s commitment to empowering Emirati women in scientific and research fields. Held annually, the forum will celebrate its sixth edition this year, providing a platform to share influential research experiences by women researchers and highlight their contributions to knowledge creation, innovation, and community service. The University is also encouraging greater participation by women researchers in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. Through research projects and the resources available at the University’s Artificial Intelligence Center, researchers are supported in developing innovative, technology-driven solutions to pressing community needs.

The Emirati Women’s Day program also includes activities designed to engage women, families, and children. Among these is an art exhibition showcasing the work of pioneering Emirati female artists, in addition to the University of Sharjah Emirati Women’s Marathon, which promotes well-being, physical activity, and sustainable health. The Deanship of Student Affairs will also organize a bazaar featuring products and entrepreneurial projects developed by Emirati female students and alumni, helping to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. In addition, a series of literary, scientific, and sports-focused sessions will bring together Emirati female students and graduates, including women with disabilities. These events are intended to provide inclusive platforms where women can share their experiences, exchange ideas, and take an active role in university and community life. The program will also feature inspiring Emirati figures, highlighting successful Emirati women as role models and enhancing their presence and contributions across various fields.

UoS’s commitment extends to the lives of women employees, with initiatives intended to help them balance career and family responsibilities. These include nursery services, flexible permission arrangements and support for women pursuing their professional and academic development. The University also promotes the stories of Emirati women through media and communications campaigns that spotlight their achievements within and beyond the institution. The campaigns will feature role models in research, academia, innovation, administration and entrepreneurship.

Together, these initiatives form part of an integrated institutional framework led by the Office for Women in Research and the Deanship of Student Affairs – Women and supported by relevant university units and departments. Through this work, the University of Sharjah continues to strengthen its role as an academic and research institution committed to empowering Emirati women and fostering an environment that recognizes their needs, ambitions, and growing contributions to the nation’s sustainable development.
