On Wednesday, His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, inaugurated the University's Innovation Hub, part of the strategic partnership between the UoS and e&.

His Highness officially inaugurated the hub by pressing a tablet to unveil the building, then watched an interactive demonstration by an advanced AI robot stationed at the hub’s entrance. The robot greeted him and the guests and gave a brief introduction to the hub and the services it offers to students, researchers and visitors, using the latest artificial intelligence models and high-performance computing.

During a tour of the facility, Sheikh Sultan visited the hub’s various laboratories and fabrication workshops, where he was briefed on advanced technologies, intelligent systems and AI-powered robotics. He also watched a live demonstration of the hub’s latest digital manufacturing tools, including 3D printing, laser cutting and engraving systems, computer numerical control machines, robotics and drones.

The opening of the hub builds on the University of Sharjah’s broader effort to deepen a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. It follows the University’s adoption of a first-of-its-kind start-up policy for students and faculty members among universities in the United Arab Emirates, allowing students and researchers to establish start-ups and turn their innovations and technologies into ventures while still pursuing their studies. UoS administration says the policy strengthens the institution’s role in serving society, converting research output into products and companies that support the national economy, and creating early employment opportunities for students before graduation.

The hub is intended to bolster the University’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem by enabling students and researchers to develop prototypes and innovative products, strengthen technology transfer and commercialize research output, and build strategic partnerships with the public and private sectors. It is also meant to prepare a generation of innovators and entrepreneurs capable of leading the economy of the future, in line with the United Arab Emirates’ vision for innovation and sustainable development.

The hub houses the latest digital manufacturing technologies, supporting advanced technological projects and enriching the university’s learning environment. These include a range of 3D printing systems, laser cutting and engraving equipment, computer numerical control machines, robotics, drones, electronic circuit fabrication tools, and virtual and augmented reality technologies. It also includes a comprehensive set of laboratories and modern fabrication workshops: a design lab, an AI and high-performance computing lab, an electronics and digital systems lab, an additive manufacturing and robotics lab, a materials fabrication workshop, a woodworking workshop, a CNC manufacturing workshop, and a metalworking and fabrication workshop.

The hub is home to the Sharjah Digital Fabrication Lab, the first digital fabrication laboratory of its kind in the emirate to join the global network of digital fabrication labs that originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. This gives the hub and the university community of faculty and students access to a worldwide network of thousands of such labs, along with opportunities to exchange expertise, projects and international standards in innovation, digital manufacturing and entrepreneurship. The hub’s inclusion in this global network marks a significant achievement that strengthens Sharjah’s standing on the world map of innovation and digital fabrication, while opening wide avenues for the university’s students and researchers to connect with peers around the world.

The University of Sharjah Innovation Hub, one of several advanced specialized facilities at UoS, serves as a sophisticated platform for innovation, entrepreneurship and technology transfer. It offers an integrated scientific environment that supports students, researchers, faculty members and entrepreneurs in transforming creative ideas and scientific research into prototypes, technologies, products and start-ups with economic and social impact, helping to support the knowledge economy and enhance the United Arab Emirates’ competitiveness in advanced innovation and technology.

The collaboration between e& and the University of Sharjah in establishing and supporting the hub reflects a shared commitment to advancing the university’s initiatives in innovation and technological transformation. University leaders describe those efforts as among the country’s most important drivers of knowledge production, innovation, invention, patent development and intellectual property, while empowering students and researchers to turn their ideas into entrepreneurial projects and start-ups with lasting economic impact.

At the end of the tour, Sheikh Sultan received a commemorative gift: a three-dimensional model of the University’s main building, produced at the hub to mark the opening. He also presented a commemorative gift to e&, and the group posed for photographs.

The opening was attended by Sheikh Saud bin Sultan Al Qasimi, director-general of the Sharjah Digital Department; Masood Sharif Mahmood, chief executive of e&; Rashid Ali Al Ali, chief executive of the Sharjah Communication Technologies Authority; H.E. Prof. Esameldin Agamy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah; and several officials from educational institutions.
