Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub Confirms Safar Crescent Invisible on July 14; New Lunar Month to Begin July 16

The Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub (SSAH), part of the University of Sharjah (UoS), has announced the results of its astronomical calculations for sighting the crescent moon of Safar for 1448 A.H. It confirmed that the crescent will not be visible on the evening of Tuesday, July 14, 2026, whether with the naked eye, through telescopes, or by advanced astronomical imaging techniques.

According to SSAH, the moon will reach lunar conjunction, the astronomical new moon, on Tuesday, July 14, at 2:30 p.m. UAE time, corresponding to 29 Muharram 1448 AH, the designated date for crescent sighting. According to SSAH, the crescent will be about 4 hours and 42 minutes old at sunset, remaining above the horizon for 17 minutes after sunset. It will be at an altitude of 3 degrees and 19 minutes, with an angular separation from the sun of 3 degrees and 21 minutes. Based on these calculations, the month of Muharram will complete 30 days, and the crescent will become relatively easy to see on the evening of Wednesday, July 15, 2026, under suitable conditions. Accordingly, the astronomical start of Safar will be Thursday, July 16, 2026.
