In collaboration with the American Nuclear Society University of Sharjah Hosts Nuclear Science Week

The University of Sharjah (UoS), through the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at the College of Engineering, organized Nuclear Science Week for high school students, in collaboration with the American Nuclear Society (ANS). The event aimed to promote awareness of nuclear energy and its applications, while highlighting the importance of radiation safety in everyday life. It was attended by several faculty members from the Colleges of Engineering and Science.

The program opened with a welcoming address by Prof. Abdul Ghani Olabi, Director of the Sustainable Energy and Power Systems Research Center at the University of Sharjah. In his remarks, he welcomed the attendees and emphasized that the event reflects the University’s commitment to encouraging students to explore various fields of science and engineering. He also underlined the importance of studying nuclear energy as a vital resource that contributes to reducing carbon emissions, addressing climate change challenges, and achieving sustainable development. He highlighted that this field offers wide prospects for scientific research and innovation, encouraging students to nurture their curiosity and participate in building a knowledge-based and sustainable energy future.

The event program featured guided tours of state-of-the-art scientific laboratories, along with hands-on experiments, lectures, and interactive activities and competitions. These activities offered students an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of nuclear energy, its peaceful applications, and the career opportunities available within this vital sector.
