The Department of Sociology occupies a distinguished position both locally and regionally. With its highly qualified and experienced faculty, the Department has undergone rapid development in the areas of research and community service. The Department also applies the latest educational methods in the bachelor’s and master’s programs.
In line with the vision of the University, the Department of Sociology offers two academic programs: a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Master’s in Applied Sociology. The Department is the largest in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, with 251 students enrolled in the undergraduate program.
The bachelor's program was re-accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education in the academic year 2009/2010.The master's program in Applied Sociology is the first of its kind in the Arab world, and has more than 206 students. The Master’s students constitute about 61.2% of the total number of students in the college. In accordance with the five-year strategy, the Department intends to establish a doctoral program in Applied Sociology in the academic year 2013/2014.
The Department of Sociology will continue to provide an excellent learning environment for students in order to provide the UAE development programs with specialized human resources concerned with human development, social work, family, women, children, the elderly, and criminal justice.
