Nutrition related health problems, chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes in particular, are serious public health concerns in the UAE. It is imperative to have technical experts to address the important issues and work towards health promotion in the community.
An appreciable demand for clinical nutritionists and dietitians was recognized in the health care sector in the UAE through the needs assessment survey. Thus, the Bachelor in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics (CN&D) program was introduced in 2005 in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Sharjah. The program aims at being recognized at national and international levels; to educate and train graduates as nutrition educators, consultants or researchers who take a position of leadership in nutrition sciences and dietetics in health agencies, food industry, educational establishments, media organizations, private sectors and community settings.
The program is delivered through a qualified and dedicated team of faculty specialized in the respective fields of food science, community and clinical nutrition and dietetics. The first batch graduated was in Spring 2009. The program is receiving a hugely positive response with a current enrollment of more than 120 students.
