The future of the planet is at critical cross-roads. The human race currently faces three of the biggest challenges it has ever known: climate change, energy security, and clean water provision. These issues affect each and every one of us on the planet. In order to address them, His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and the president of the University has invested at the highest level in the training of bright minds and the creation of advanced research facilities at the University of Sharjah. As well as tackling these formidable challenges, we also wish to ensure that our children will inherit from us a truly sustainable and knowledge-based economy.
Engineering has the power to transform lives. This is why I became an engineer and why our students at the College of Engineering in the University of Sharjah are so passionate about pursuing an engineering education. His Highness Dr Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and the Chancellor Professor Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy have made abundant resources available to the College of Engineering to achieve high level of excellence.
Our College of Engineering, established in 1997, is one of the largest colleges in the University of Sharjah with established undergraduate and graduate programs recognized nationally and internationally and accredited by various accreditations bodies, including the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the American Board of Engineering and Technology.
My vision for Engineering at the University of Sharjah is to work closely with students and faculty to establish it as the preeminent centre for teaching, research and entrepreneurship in the UAE, the region and beyond. This will be true across the full spectrum of our collaborative, multi-disciplinary activity, from blue-skies fundamental research through to cutting edge industrial applications. It is my ambition to foster an environment of excellence, inquiry and innovation, in which young and outstanding minds work closely with leading faculty to create compelling and original solutions to the problems of society today.
Today engineering education and research are in a period of extraordinary transition. Our College too is undergoing on an exciting transformation. Over the next few years we will grow our student body, increase the number of our research active faculty and expand our research enterprise to address most difficult and pressing technological problems in Sharjah, UAE and the region. This expansion will allow us to better serve Sharjah and the UAE and to accommodate many more of the talented applicants who seek to attend Engineering at the University of Sharjah.
I believe there are huge opportunities to transform the way we teach engineering, and even who we teach it to. We will bring the latest educational technologies to our classrooms and build on the successes of the college. I would say to prospectus talented students "Stay close… Go further".
It is both an honour and a pleasure to be the Dean of College of Engineering at the University of Sharjah. I am confident that the college will reach new heights in a spirit of mutual cooperation, respect, and optimism for the future.
