Dental education has evolved over the last century from essentially a craft-oriented pedagogy to a much broader university education embracing elements such as research and innovation, community service, and the inevitable digital technology. There has been a simultaneous evolution in education `technology` from a teacher oriented to a learner oriented philosophy. These vary from problem-based learning (PBL), competency-based learning, outcome-based learning, case-based learning, and inter professional learning to the more recent notions such as transformational learning and personalised learning. As a dental educator with more than four decades of experience, in four different continents, my teaching philosophy therefore is to teach the students `how to learn to become life-long- and self-directed learners` with empathy and humane attitudes towards their fellow humans, in an ever-changing ephemeral world.
