The University of Sharjah, through the vision and generosity of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, has recently acquired from the United States the latest high-tech Mobile Dental Clinic for the College of Dental Medicine. This idea for the College to acquire a Mobile Clinic was suggested by a student at the College, Eteman Watheq Ibrahim Radhi and a proposal and design was submitted to the Chancellor by the former Dean of the CDM, Professor Richard Simonsen who then spent time in the USA training and overseeing the construction. The Mobile Dental Clinic was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi on 3rd of February 2016, in the presence of the Chancellor of UOS, Prof Hamid Al Naimi, Prof Sausan Al Kawas- the Acting Dean and many other important guests from MOH and Sharjah government.

The Mobile Clinic has three treatment units that can be utilized simultaneously to treat the elderly, the homebound, those who cannot travel to the University clinics, and others with special needs. It can also be used to visit schools, and students from the CDM will offer training in oral hygiene to teachers, parents and the pupils at schools, while examinations of the children are carried out. In addition to dental x-rays, the students and interns who work in the clinic can perform basic restorative and surgical procedures as well as periodontal and endodontic maintenance. A wheelchair lift is part of the Clinic so that those who have difficulty walking can be treated normally.

The Mobile Clinic has among other places, visited the Old People’s Home in Sharjah, Sharjah City Humanitarian Centers in Sharjah and Kalba, Social Service Centers in Sharjah and Kalba, as well as the Dibba Al Fujairah Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled. On March 19 the UoS Mobile Dental Clinic participated in World Oral Health Day in Sharjah promoting oral health and examining many children.

Over 100 patients have already been seen by the Mobile Clinic and many hundreds more will be assisted in maintaining their dental health in the months to come. It is expected that the UoS Mobile Dental Clinic will be a valuable resource for the treatment of dental disease in the elderly and the young, especially in the special needs population.
