Abstract

Perinatal mental health is a costly public health issue that impacts the whole family and places children at risk for poor developmental trajectories. This presentation will discuss the importance of clinical depression and anxiety for women during pregnancy and the first year postpartum. Prevalence and risk factors will be outlined and the impact on child development highlighted. The effect of postpartum depression on fathers will also be described. Effective preventive and treatment interventions will be outlined and the need for screening programs discussed. A new approach to the overall management of perinatal depression will be presented.
