A delegation from the University of Sharjah visited the Skoltech Campus and Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow, Russia. Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University, led the delegation along with Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, and Dr. Salah Taher, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs.
The delegation met with Prof. Aleksandr Kulchov, President of Skolkov Institute of Science and Technology, during which they discussed possible areas of collaboration. They also met with Prof. Clement Forten, Deputy Director of the University of Skoltech, who gave a presentation about the university and discussed their collaboration with the American University of MIT, the Canadian University of Calgary, the German University of Munich, as well as the British Oxford University. He also addressed the role of MIT in contributing to the establishment of Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and Skoltech Campus. Skoltech University, he added, is one of the most prestigious universities with advanced and varied areas of research such as biotechnology and petroleum and gas studies. It also houses a number of advanced research centers in the fields of information technology, artificial intelligence, biology, design and industry, energy, and photons technologies as well as advanced materials technologies.
Dr. Lawrence Stein, Vice President for International Development, gave a presentation on the Center for Entrepreneurship at Skoltech University and the Technology Campus, and explained how to transform students' ideas into business ventures so that students receive special training in entrepreneurship, technology and innovation. This in addition to the extracurricular activities to qualify students to establish companies and explained the existence of some companies that were established through the University and cited examples in the field of automation, space, engineering and technology.
For his part, Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, gave a brief about the University of Sharjah, which includes institutes and centers of scientific research and development, pointing out the number of students enrolled in the programs offered by the University especially in postgraduate studies. He stressed the remarkable and rapid progress of scientific research in recent years compared to other national universities.
At the end of the meeting, the delegation toured Skoltech University to learn about its facilities, educational classrooms, and computer laboratories. They also visited the specialized laboratories in ceramics, plastic, and metals 3D printing, as well as the mechanics laboratory for selecting metals and the FabLab.
