The University of Sharjah launched the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit at the University's Medical Campus in the attendance of Prof. Qutayba Hamid Al Heialy, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Health Sciences and Dean of College of Medicine. A number of academics and researchers from various universities in the UAE also attended the launch along with representatives from the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Dubai Health Authority, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Co. (SEHA), the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, and the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.
During the ceremony, Prof. Al Heialy welcomed the attendees and commended the efforts of the organizing committees. He stressed the importance of epidemiology as a program on which health-care activities at all levels are based, and through which the area of health care in general develops. Dr. Bassima Al-Siddiq, Head of the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit, then spoke about the importance of epidemiology and the role of this Unit in building capacities in the field of scientific research especially in the field of disease spread and the services it will provide. The launch also featured discussions to propose new ideas and explore possible areas of collaboration among the attendees.
The Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit is the first of its kind at the national level in the UAE and includes a group of multidisciplinary researchers, academics, health care professionals and policy makers. The Unit aims to conduct scientific and applied epidemiological research targeting current and emerging health needs at all the local, regional and global levels. The Unit also contributes to strengthening research capacity and basic epidemiological skills by providing a variety of research, training and consulting services.
