The Sharjah Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences, recently renamed as the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy and Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST) following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, has started the activities of its "9th Spring Space Camp." The Camp aims to educate, inspire, and engage the innovative minds of students in the fields of astronomy and space sciences and technologies using the inspiration of the high technology and employees' knowledge of SAASST.
Deputy General Director for the Space Exhibitions and Planetarium Mr. Marwan Shwaiki stated that during this Camp, students interested in astronomy and space technology partake in a journey of a number of space workshops where they will learn two major topics: first, astronomy and cosmology in which the students will focus on understanding the principles of astronomy including the structure of the universe, and understanding the sizes of the celestial objects in comparison with the size of the Earth, the Sun, and our Milky Way Galaxy. The second topic covers understanding the space environment and the outer space challenges that await astronauts when they travel away from the Earth's atmosphere such as the low and high temperature, low and high pressure, microgravity and the deadly cosmic rays.
On the other hand, he continued, as the UAE is deeply and strongly taking solid steps towards leading in space technology, the University of Sharjah through SAASST is focusing on educating students in this field and this includes attending hands-on workshops and spending a day in the Department of Research Laboratories and Sharjah Observatory where they will be able to observe the sun live through the solar telescope and learn the principles of radio astronomy, meteorites classification and detection, CubeSat making, and space weather and the ionosphere.
