Coming from its social responsibility, and as part of the UAE's preparations for the "Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019" – the largest humanitarian sports event, the University of Sharjah hosts the "Conference on Empowerment of People with Disabilities." The Conference aims to discuss current challenges of people with disabilities medical caregivers and attempting to find alternative solutions. A number of participants and speakers from around the world participated in the Conference that came in collaboration with the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) – the University of Sharjah chapter, the University Disability Resource Center, as well as a large number of centers that provide support services for people with disabilities.
During his inaugural word, His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, extended his gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, for providing an example of caring for people with disabilities and directing the establishment of specialized organizations that serve and support them medically, socially, and academically such as through the University's Disability Resource Center. The Center introduced different types and systems of care and support to facilitate the achievement of university education, and to address all the obstacles of this process using specialists and the regulations. His Highness' also directed that students with disabilities be granted scholarships for studying at the various academic levels regardless of the nationality of the students.
For his part, Prof. Qutayba Hamid Al Heialy, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Health Sciences and Dean of College of Medicine, thanked the speakers and participants of the Conference. He also thanked the Organizing Committee and the students for organizing the event. He added that one of the pillars of the strategic plan of the University of Sharjah is the service and development of the community, and that the category of people with disabilities is an important part of the community of the University of Sharjah.
As for Prof. Hien Hgo, Dean of the College of Dental Medicine, he welcomed the attendees and commended the support of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah as well as the support of the University for all student activities. He also extended his thanks to the students of the College of Dental Medicine and the AADMD Chapter for organizing this Conference.
During the inauguration session, Prof. Steve Perlman, President of the Conference on the Empowerment of People with Disabilities and Head of the Department of Medicine at the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi, delivered a speech in which he expressed the importance of the Conference and emphasized its importance to support the abilities and capacities people with disabilities. Dr. Alia Zinni, President of the AADMD Chapter, gave a presentation about the Academy, its objectives, goals and services it provides to society in general and to the people with disabilities specifically.
The Chancellor of the University attended the inauguration along with Prof. Qutayba Hamid Al Heialy, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Health Sciences and Dean of College of Medicine; Dr. Salah Taher, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs; Prof. Hien Hgo, Dean of the College of Dental Medicine; Prof. Steven Perlman, President of the Conference on the Empowerment of People with Disabilities and Head of the Department of Medicine at the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi; as well as the College Deans and a large number of students.
