31 December 2018

The University of Sharjah continued its advancement in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which measures international universities in terms of their commitment to developing in an environmentally friendly infrastructure. The University of Sharjah has occupied the top rank in the UAE for the second year in a row and ranked 398 internationally, advancing 54 ranks internationally and 3 ranks within the Arab region in comparison with 2017.

His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, addressed the occasion stating that the University entering this UI GreenMetric World University Rankings system for the first time in the past year (2017) and achieving the top rank in the UAE for the second year in a row is a clear indicator of following the directives and strategies for advancing internationally in all fields as established by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University.

The Chancellor continued stating that the University of Sharjah's interest in this ranking system comes from its keenness on strengthening its international standing in sustainable and environmental development as well as raising the awareness of the University and surrounding community of the issues related to both fields. This is through, he added, expanding the green areas that constitutes approximately 19% of the total area of the University, moving towards an "environmentally friendly" infrastructure, reducing energy use and using solar energy, in addition to reducing air pollution at the University and use of paper by computerizing educational and administrative processes. All of this contributed to preserving natural resources and reducing pollutants and harmful emissions to the environment.
