The Consultative Council and the University of Sharjah Launch the First Batch of the Professional Diploma in Parliamentary Work

2 October 2018

In the presence of Her Excellency Khawla Al Mulla, Chairperson of the Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC), and His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, the first batch of the Professional Diploma in Parliamentary Work was launched at the University's Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development with 27 enrolled national members. The program will last for two months and a half with the Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development overseeing its preparation and implementation in collaboration with the Sharjah Consultative Council.

Attending the program launch were The Secretary General of Sharjah Consultative Council Ahmed Saeed Al Jarwan; Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashimi, Member of the University of Sharjah's Board of Trustees; Prof. Elsiddig Ahmed ElMustafa El Sheikh, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Prof. Radhi Al Zubaidi, Director of the Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development; and Prof. Sam Souliman Dalla, Legal Consultant of the University.

In his address on this occasion, the Chancellor of the University stressed that the University of Sharjah has now become one of the largest universities in the UAE in terms of the numbers of students enrolled, research centers and institutes, and offered programs – especially the number of graduate studies programs. The University is also rising in the world rankings every year.

His Excellency confirmed that this success of the University is thanks to the blessings of God and the directives and patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah.

The Chancellor of the University added that professional diplomas that meet the demands of society are a fundamental component of the University's academic strategy. This is through connecting scientific research with teaching and learning using modern education methods and techniques. The University, he added, also relied on recent surveys conducted nationally and regionally to ensure that the programs it offers meet the demands of the job market through tailoring them and approving them by the University's specialized committees, which then move on to be accredited by the Ministry of Education in the UAE before being offered to students.

For her part, Her Excellency Khawla Al Mulla commended His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah for supporting the concept of this diploma and extended her thanks to the University of Sharjah and its Chancellor for their efforts in supporting the program since its conceptualization and until its launch. She also thanked the General Secretariat for their contribution to the success of the program.

She added that this program is a type of in-depth comprehensive study that works to spread the culture of parliamentary affairs, their composition, work mechanisms, and procedures. The program is also unique in that it combined a number of disciplines to give rich materials of parliamentary culture.

She concluded her address by urging the program's members to utilize it to the best extent in order to contribute to the national development and the cultural journey of the Emirate of Sharjah.

In his remarks, Prof. Radhi Al Zubaidi stated that the program is the first of its kind in the country, and it covers 14 topics presented by 12 different lectures from various disciplines. It lasts for 10 weeks, and he urged the program members to neutrally evaluate it after this period. The program covers, he added, a number of topics such as: the constitution concept and elections, the operation of the global major constitutional systems, the UAE's judicial system, the composition of the Sharjah Consultative Council and its work mechanism and authorities, the role of legislative and consultative entities in finance and development affairs, parliament members work directory, and parliamentary diplomacy and protocol skills.
