Under the patronage and in presence of His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of University of Sharjah, UoS concluded a joint workshop co-organized with Boehringer Ingelheim as part of a cooperation agreement signed between the parties on 2013. In its fourth year, the agreement aims to enable research and innovation skills of the students in the fields of cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer, respiratory and neurological diseases as well as other relevant specialties.
The two-day research and development workshop, was held on 7th and 8th of November at the university's campus in presence of Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, Prof. Qutayba Hamid Al Heialy, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Health Sciences and Dean of College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Taleb H. Al-Tel, Director of the Research Institute of Medical & Health Sciences. Attended the workshop as well, Dr. Mazen Bachir, Country Manager – Gulf and Iran, UoS faculty members, and experts from Boehringer Ingelheim. The workshop is intended to support advanced research projects presented by fifth year and postgraduate studies students at the College of Medicine, Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, as part of framework between the parties to highlight the significance of new research and innovative ideas, motivate students to seek more research and development, support innovation, and pass the knowledge to future generations.On the first day, the jury comprised of faculty members and experts from Boehringer Ingelheim, examined the research drafts of the students. The second day was marked by research presentation and findings of the students. The jury made their decisions based on the significance of the results and impact of the research itself.Prof. Hamid Al Naimiy began the workshop by welcoming the audience, appreciated the continuous cooperation between Boehringer Ingelheim and University of Sharjah, manifest by the latest research and development discoveries that were achieved, and expressed his hope to continue the advancement of such research and achieve remarkable impact in the healthcare sector through the student's quality shift in the field. He also wished to continue the fruitful cooperation that would lead to influential partnerships in the future.Prof. Maamar Bettayeb expressed his appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Mazen Bachir, Boehringer Ingelheim Country Manager, and assistant team. He also thanked the participants; professors, students and coordinators. "With the support of H.E. Prof. Hamid Al Naimiy, Chancellor of University of Sharjah, we are striving to achieve high-quality student research and projects", stated Prof. Bettayeb. "Engaged in research groups and projects with our faculty members, the students are one of the key factors to the success of such cooperation with their effective participation and contribution in all fields, especially medical ones", added Prof. Bettayeb. "Such cooperation is the main reason for highlighting and publishing student research in international outlets"."This unique program is witnessing great turnout by the students", stated Prof. Qutayba Hamid. Expressing his shock with the enthusiasm of students, who want to join the program, conduct their research and submit new ideas and free thinking to find solutions to medical problems, noted that the phenomenal outcome of this cooperation has given the students an opportunity to start their research at such an early stage of learning. He also assured UoS' continuous strive to better the community's culture and graduate scientists, rather than practitioners.Dr. Mazen Bachir stated "Boehringer Ingelheim continues to invest and focus on research and development to meet the growing needs of patients and improve their lives; our community responsibility is one of the key values we strive to realize, as our commitment to UAE society encourages us to nurture and support its future generations". "Our efforts are focused on enriching the educational experience of students and provide them with practical understanding of cutting-edge developments in this sector, which helps them to start a successful career and achieve their aspirations, inspire other students, and contribute to strengthening our position as reputable destination for attracting talents and establish a new generation of scientists who take part in the development and improvement of healthcare sector", added Dr. Bachir.Dr. Taleb Al-Tel noted "we are proud to cooperate yet again with Boehringer Ingelheim to establish a generation of future scientists in the UAE, and confident with our students' ability to become role model and an inspiration to other students to participate in such important research projects". Concluding his speech, Dr. Taleb thanked the sponsoring parties of these research projects that support innovation and positive change.Participants in the workshop gave presentations and lectures in the field of healthcare, while Boehringer Ingelheim's medical experts Lectures and presentations at the workshop were provided in the field of healthcare by the participants, and in other therapeutical fields by Boehringer Ingelheim's medical experts. The experts also took part in the discussions amid the workshop and toured the university's campus to learn about the state-of-the-art equipment at the Institute of Medical & Health Sciences, in which the workshop was organized.
