Dr. Robin Broughton is a professor of Communications & Media Studies at West Virginia State University, where she teaches courses in Media Law, Media Criticism and Journalism. A former newspaper reporter, she also has written two books on mountain biking in West Virginia (“Mountain Biker’s Guide to West Virginia” 2006 and “A Guide to West Virginia Rail Trails” 2009). She currently is working on a third book “A Guide to Adventure Sports in West Virginia.” She has had many articles published in outdoor travel magazines and websites and regularly contributes to West Virginia Division of Tourism publications. At WVSU, she has led several international study tours and filmmaking trips, including one to Tanzania, East Africa, where she and a group of students climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. Most recently, she led a student group to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where she directed a short narrative film and helped forge a partnership between WVSU and the University of Sharjah. Broughton also has led student groups on adventure study tours in the Czech Republic and Belize. She has presented papers at several international conferences, including the International Conference for Social Sciences in Cambridge, England, and the International Communication Association Conference in Sydney, Australia, in the areas of constructions of death in social media. Broughton has a Ph.D. in Interpersonal Communication; an MA in Philosophy and a BS in Journalism, all from Ohio University.  She lives in Winfield, WV, with her son Tristan (a sophomore at WVSU) and her daughter Keatan (a sophomore at Winfield High School).
