Conference on Intellectual Property Rights at UOS

Under the patronage of H. H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and the Supreme President of University of Sharjah, Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qassimi, Chairman of Sharjah Central Finance Department opened the international conference entitled, “New Perspectives on the Legal Regulation of Intellectual Property Rights” organized by the College of Law from 17th-19th November, 2009 at the University of Sharjah (UOS).
A number of prominent academics and legal and professional specialists in the field of intellectual property rights from all over the world are participating in this event. The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Mohammed Diab Al Mousa, Adviser to the Sharjah Emiri Diwan, Consultant Dr. Mohammed Al Kamali, Director General of the Institute for Training and Judicial Studies in addition to Dr. Salah Taher Al Haj, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, Prof. Salim Sabri, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Mohammed Ismail, Vice Chancellor for Administrative and Financial Affairs, college deans, directors of UOS departments and centers, faculty, and staff.
In his speech, Prof. Adnan Sarhan, Dean of the College of Law, said that the UAE has enacted a number of property rights legislations including Federal Law No. 37 of 1992 regarding trademarks, Federal Law No. 17 of 2002 regarding patents, drawings and industrial designs, and Federal Law No. 7 of 2002 regarding copyright laws and related rights.
Prof. Sarhan continued saying, “We hope this conference will contribute to highlighting the modern role of the UAE and the global dimensions of the University of Sharjah. Also, outcomes and recommendations stemming from the conference will be important to improving laws already in force in the UAE and to enacting new legislation. This should help to protect intellectual property rights in both the public and private sectors and enhance the role of the UAE in implementing its international obligations concerning the protection of intellectual property rights emanating from international conventions ratified by the UAE.”
The conference aims to highlight new perspectives on legal regulations and intellectual property rights in the UAE, to compare national legislation on intellectual property rights with similar Arab and foreign legislations, and to familiarize students, researchers and jurists with problems posed by new legislation and various solutions. The conference also aims at determining positive and negative aspects concerning UAE national laws and introducing suggestions and recommendations to help improve national legislations and their implementation.
Conference themes include: Recent trends in the legal regulation of industrial and commercial intellectual property rights, recent trends in the legal regulation of rights similar to industrial and commercial intellectual property rights, recent trends in the legal regulation of the literary and artistic intellectual property rights and related rights, and protection of intellectual property rights having to do with the internet and websites.
