Opening of International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Information Technology

Prof. Eng. Samy Mahmoud, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah (UOS), opened yesterday, the activities of the First International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Information Technology (MCIT-2010) that is organized by the Department of Computer Science under the College of Sciences at UOS from March, 2nd to 4th, 2010. Around 32 experts and specialists from 30 countries participated in this conference.
The opening ceremony was attended by Prof. Salim Sabri, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Mohammed Ismail, Vice Chancellor for Administration and Financial Affairs, Dr. Salah Taher Al Haj, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, Prof. Hamid Al Naimy, Dean of the College of Sciences, colleges’ deans, and a number of UOS faculty members and guests.
In his speech, Prof. Eng. Samy emphasized that the University of Sharjah is being guided by the vision of its Founder and Supreme President His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, in its way of development. It offers undergraduate and graduate academic and research programs across a broad range of disciplines. It also focuses on the fields of scientific research and collaborations with international pioneering research centers and foundations.
Regarding the scientific research, Prof. Eng. Samy said that the University has recently developed a new strategic plan focusing on six research domains including Sustainable Energy and the Environment, Sustainable Infrastructure, International Law, Business and Treaties, Molecular Medicine and Transitional Medicine, Historical and Contemporary Issues in Arabic and Islamic history and Civilization, and Social and Educational Studies.
He added that the University takes an interest in fields of interactive multimedia and design, giving examples of colleges of Sciences, Communication, Fine Arts and Design, Health Sciences, Medicine, Community College.
Commenting on this conference, Prof. Hamid Al Naimy, Dean of the College of Sciences, said that this conference is part of a series of future conferences, bringing together leading researchers, academics, practitioners and specialists in order to discuss and share ideas on important topics at local, regional and international levels. He indicated the four themes are Information Systems & Applications, Multimedia Systems & Processing, Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence and Network & Wireless Technology and Applications.
