The Centeral Laboratories 

 

The Central Laboratories are the umbrella for the administration of the scientific and technical laboratories for the Colleges of Engineering, Sciences, Health Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. The laboratories consist of two buildings in the main campus W12 & M12 and laboratories in the Medical and Health Sciences Campus M23, M27& M28. At present time there are 71 labs in the main campus and 27 labs in the Medical Campus, among these labs five designated as research laboratories. The Central Labs Administration is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of over 5000 equipment and keeping track and stock of over 50,000 consumable items.

 The Central Laboratories’ mission is to provide a safe environment at its facilities, where students and faculty train, apply knowledge and conduct research in an efficient and productive atmosphere. The Central labs uniqueness and strength is supported by the central management of its facilities, where planning and timed acquisition and contracted maintenance of resources (equipment and machines) are monitored continuously.

 

    The objectives of the Central Laboratories are:

    Maintenance

    • Establishing a maintenance system for all laboratory and workshop equipment including preventive maintenance and breakdown maintenance.
    • Establishing a maintenance unit for the equipment and apparatus and consumables.
    • Operating a computer database to ensure the systematic maintenance schedule for equipment and keep an
      up-to-date inventory of the records of spare parts.

    Inventory

    • Maintaining an electric inventory for all laboratories and workshops by using a unified system for the capital
      equipment, aparatus and consumables.

    Acquisition Equipment

    • Establishing in coordination with the Colleges and Department of Business Services and Purchasing
      procedures and systems for the acquistion of equipment, product and supplier appraisal, knowledge of legal
      guidelines and dissemination of purchasing information from suppliers.
    • Providing documentation for catalogues and other useful purchasing material.

    Purchase of Consumables

    • Providing the Business Services and Purchasing Department the technical advice and specifications, so they
      can purchase the laboratory consumables in an efficient way.
    • Manage the store of such consumables in safe way and facilitate their distribution.

    Safety and Security

    • Establishing a safety policy.
    • Creating an environment where students may not be exposed to hazards and raising their awareness of
      safety and risk issues.
    • Maintaining security procedures for the buildings.

    Training

    • Providing training for technichal staff, based on the recommendations of the Colleges on safety procedures in the laboratories and the safe operation of equipment.

    Administration

    • Establishing a database for the Lecturers supervising the laboratories and other laboratory staff including
      Teaching Assistants, Lab Assistants and Technicians, Lab workers, Office boys etc.
    • Establishing job descriptions for all staff members in the laboratories in coordination with the Colleges.

    Teaching and Research Support

    • Coordinating with academic and research staff to determine the need for purchasing equipment, including
      specification of requirements.
    • Coordinating with equipment suppliers to ensure the timely purchase of the equipment which meets the
      specifications and the budget.
