Under the guidance and patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, Founder and Supreme President of the University of Sharjah, and consistent the vision of His Highness, the Central Laboratories combines human intellect  and technical ingenuity to fulfill the University’s mission. The Central Laboratories has expanded over time to cater to the growing needs of six of the University’s colleges and their various departments to guarantee optimal space with state-of-the-art equipment and research instruments to serve students, faculty and external research partners.

The Central Laboratories administers labs for the Colleges of Engineering, Sciences, Health Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. The Central Laboratories consists of two main buildings on the main campus in W12 and M12, laboratories at the Medical and Health Sciences Complex in M23, M27 and M28 and laboratories at the University’s branch in Khorfakkan.  Currently, there are 71 labs on the main campus and 23 labs on the Medical and Health Sciences campus and four labs in Khorfakkan, among which seven are designated as research laboratories. The Central Laboratories is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of over 5,500 pieces of equipment and runs an inventory for a stock of over 380,000 consumable items.

The vision of the Central Laboratories is to be among the most technologically advanced, large-scale and leading university laboratories in the region and across the globe offering abundant resources, skilled management, and quality services in education and research to students, faculty and the community-at-large.

The mission of the Central Laboratories is to provide a safe environment at its facilities, where students and faculty may train, apply knowledge and conduct research in an efficient and productive atmosphere. The Central laboratories’ uniqueness and strength are supported by the central management of its facilities, where planning and timed acquisition and contracted maintenance of resources (equipment and machines) are monitored continuously.

The Central Laboratories administers the labs to achieve the following goals:

1. Purchasing  New Equipment

Managing the acquisition of all equipment, tools and consumables administered by the Central Laboratories from the time of requisition until the final delivery of items to end users.

2. Equipment Maintenance

Maintenance involves all the essential operations required for maintaining the equipment within prescribed limits. It also involves activities such as inspection, repairs, calibration, tests, measurements, replacements, and adjustments intended to restore or retain the specified state of all laboratory equipment. The Central Labs has established a maintenance policy in which preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance and breakdown maintenance are performed as needed and as per a planned schedule. The Central Labs management is responsible for all external maintenance contracts. The responsibility of the Central Labs includes, but is not limited to, preparing maintenance contracts, selecting best offers and following up on the implementation of contracts to ensure that companies are honoring provisions as stated in their contracts.

3. Laboratory Buildings Maintenance

Central Laboratories monitors the general maintenance of M12 and W12 building facilities, and through its staff, minor maintenance problems that may be fixed directly. Major maintenance issues are coordinated with the Physical Plant Department.

4. Space Management

Central Laboratories (CL) prepares percentage statistics on the utilization of all labs in M12 and W12. The CL management provides all data and recommendations to the Central Labs Committee for the redistribution of lab space between programs to satisfy all program needs when necessary.

5. Store Services

Central Laboratories has various types of stores for receiving equipment, apparatus, consumables, chemicals and tools before delivering these to end users. Central Laboratories makes sure that daily consumables are available in the store to keep University labs running smoothly.

6. Inventory

Central Laboratories maintains an electronic inventory for all laboratories and workshops by using a unified inventory system for capital equipment, apparatus and consumables.

7. Safety

Central Laboratories works to establish safety policies to create an environment where students are not exposed to hazards and one that raises their awareness of safety and risk issues. Central Laboratories organizes trainings sessions regarding safety use of equipment, fire-safety and the health of faculty, staff and students. Every time new equipment is installed and commissioned, it is our responsibility to request from the supplier safety training sessions in addition to normal training sessions.

8. Training

Training is provided for technical staff based on the recommendations of the colleges concerning safety procedures in the laboratories and the safe operation of equipment.

Central Laboratories is looking forward to becoming one of the University’s main foundations in serving students and faculty. Central Laboratories is also aiming to strengthen its ties with the local and regional community to maximize the benefit and use of its robust facilities.
