Laboratories Safety Policy
The Central Laboratories organizes trainings sessions regarding safety use of the equipments, fire-safety and health of the staff and students. Every time new equipment is installed and commissioned, it is our responsibility to request from the supplier safety trainings, in addition to the normal trainings.

Our safety policy includes the following programs:
- Laboratory Hygiene
The practice of recognition, evaluation and control of potentially harmful substances and physical agents in the work area. The scope of this program shall include, but not be limited to, toxic materials, air quality in controlled environmental, elements of physical exposure such as lighting, noise and temperature, and the safe storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials.
- General Safety
Identification and correction of factors which contribute to the incidence of accidental injury shall be maintained. The scope of these efforts shall include environmental conditions, maintenance of facilities and equipment, and the human factor.

- Fire Protection
Program activities shall be sustained which serve to protect from fire. Facilities shall be maintained and operated in compliance with applicable regulations and accepted standards of fire, safety and protection.
- Disaster Preparedness
Preparedness programs shall facilitate appropriate technical response to disasters and plan for the coordination of diverse response organizations and activities. Appropriate emergency response plans shall be maintained for each building and steps taken to ensure adequate familiarity with the plan of the staff.
- Radiation Safety
Applicable regulations and appropriate standards shall be observed in the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines. Appropriate guidelines shall be followed relating to the proper use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.

- Biological Safety
Applicable regulations and accepted standards governing the use, storage, and disposal of hazardous biological substances shall be observed. Conscientious surveillance shall be maintained and resources and technology applied to the handling of bio-hazardous substances consistent with regulatory controls and/ or recognized health and safety standards.
- Chemical Safety
The Central Laboratories monitor and coordinate the labs Chemical Safety Programs, which includes chemical safety inspections, accident investigations, toxic materials clean-up and chemical safety training.
It includes development and implementation of chemical safety programs such as proper chemical inventory, labeling and storage procedures, chemical material disposal, chemical or toxic spill clean-up, chemical implications for fire protection, and any chemicals safety and health administration for chemical safety compliance programs; develops and implements laboratory chemical hygiene plans; assists with the preparation of standard operating procedures' communicates this information to newcomers to campus.

Advises various University's colleges and departments about chemical safety protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by the university and Civil Defense Departments and Environmental Protection.
Coordinates special waste disposal projects for toxic or hazardous solids, liquids or gases including mixed waste and radioactive materials as well as ensuring proper implementation of laser safety program (if any).
It also includes development and implementation of the central labs code for building safety. |
